Bloody footprints leading away from the scene reveal that another victim – a woman – has left the scene and vanished into thin air. And, worst of all, the warehouse belongs to the city’s biggest, most politically connected, most high-profile athlete – a local hero protected by the world’s most expensive lawyers. A local hero Will has spent the last six months investigating on a brutal rape charge.

But for Will – and also for Dr Sara Linton, the GBI’s newest medical examiner – the case is about to get even worse. Because an unexpected discovery at the scene reveals a personal link to Will’s troubled past. The consequences will wreak havoc on his life and the lives of those he loves, those he works with, and those he pursues.

But Sara’s scene-of-the-crime diagnosis is that they only have a few hours to find the missing woman before she bleeds out . . .

Review –

There is nobody, and I do mean nobody, who writes the kind of books Karin Slaughter does. Her novels are heavily plotted with twists and turns we never expect and never predict. She creates characters readers love to love, and love to hate. She writes about real people, not some glossy type of imagined characters. With her brand of talent she makes the reader feel enriched after having finished her stories. Slaughter’s latest novel,The Kept Woman,  is saturated with all of these elements which makes it one of her most engrossing thrillers yet.

I’ve read all of the Will Trent series(this is number eight) so I know that background and all the characters very well, but the author does give a hint of background for the characters that it also could be read as a standalone.

The story line is full of high tension, nerve-wracking situations, relentless investigations and an ending you don’t anticipate. For these and other reasons you really need to check out this book. You will definitely not regret it.

I always try to read a Karin Slaughter novel in January and so I’m extremely glad I slipped this one in before the end of the month. Now, I can’t wait for the next book !

Review –

This is a short novella which leads up to the novel Unseen, which I read  in September of 2013 and don’t know how I missed this one.

Poor Will Trent, in the wrong place at the wrong time, and all because of an Coke flavored Icee!

If you are familiar with the Keystone Cops, that’s what part of this story felt like. There was chaos, chasing a hold up man in a beat up  pick-up down the Interstate, finding out that an 84-year-old grandmotherly woman lied about everything ad finally getting the bad guys put where they belong.  That’s really all I can say without giving away too much.

If you’ve never read or listened to anything by author, Karin Slaughter, you should really give this a try.  It is short and you’ll get a sample of her writing style. It will not disappoint.

Book Description

Publication Date:May 14, 2012
A gripping, action-packed short story available only as an eBook—from a master of character, crime, and urgent suspense. Will Trent, a dedicated agent with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation for fifteen years, knows that there’s definitely such a thing as a cop’s intuition. Which is why he should have listened to his own.
While in an airport restroom at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International, Will overhears a girl’s pleading, plaintive voice: “Please, I wanna go home.” Something isn’t right here, thinks Will. He feels it in his gut. But he waits too long to act, and now the girl and the anxious, angry man she’s with have disappeared into the crowds at the busiest passenger airport in the world. After a desperate search and with time running out, Will makes a call to his supervisor, Amanda Wagner. Will’s partner, Faith Mitchell, immediately sends out an abducted child alert. The entire airport will soon be grinding to a halt: Almost 100 million passengers a year. Five runways. Seven concourses. Six million square feet of space that sprawled across two counties, three cities, and five jurisdictions. All shut down on a dime because Will has a hunch that he is certain is true: a girl, maybe six or seven years old, has been snatched from God knows where. And he intends to bring her back—no matter what it takes.
Review –
This was a short story in audio book form and held my attention  from beginning to end.
I have read other books in the Will Trent Series  so I’m familiar with the characters and their interactions which made this story even more enjoyable.
If you like a good action packed crime drama you should really think about this series to your “to be read” list.

Criminal (Will Trent #7) by Karin Slaughter

Book Description

Publication Date: July 3, 2012

Karin Slaughter’s new novel is an epic tale of love, loyalty, and murder that encompasses forty years, two chillingly similar murder cases, and a good man’s deepest secrets.

Will Trent is a brilliant agent with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Newly in love, he is beginning to put a difficult past behind him. Then a local college student goes missing, and Will is inexplicably kept off the case by his supervisor and mentor, deputy director Amanda Wagner. Will cannot fathom Amanda’s motivation until the two of them literally collide in an abandoned orphanage they have both been drawn to for different reasons. Decades before—when Will’s father was imprisoned for murder—this was his home. . . .

Flash back nearly forty years. In the summer Will Trent was born, Amanda Wagner is going to college, making Sunday dinners for her father, taking her first steps in the boys’ club that is the Atlanta Police Department. One of her first cases is to investigate a brutal crime in one of the city’s worst neighborhoods. Amanda and her partner, Evelyn, are the only ones who seem to care if an arrest is ever made.

Now the case that launched Amanda’s career has suddenly come back to life, intertwined with the long-held mystery of Will’s birth and parentage. And these two dauntless investigators will each need to face down demons from the past if they are to prevent an even greater terror from being unleashed.

A masterpiece of character, atmosphere, and riveting suspense, Criminal is the most powerful and moving novel yet from one of our most gifted storytellers at work today.

***** I rate this book 5  stars.  I had the audio version but I know the physical hard copy would have had me hooked just the same.  This  heart-stopping thriller combines characters from her (the author) two  crime series: The Will Trent Series and The Grant County Series.
Will Trent is one of my favorite fictional characters and we learn so much about him in the book and about the people around him and the story is like a roller coaster ride on a triple dose of steroids.  Action, Action and More Action.   Loved this book!!!! Can you tell????   If you’ve never read this author, Karin Slaughter, you should go TODAY and get a Will Trent book and a Grant County book and then get Criminal and you will be a fan for life.
