New York Times bestselling author Karin Slaughter brings back Will Trent and Sara Linton in this superb and timely thriller full of devious twists, disturbing secrets, and shocking surprises you won’t see coming

A devastating explosion

One month later, the serenity of a sunny Sunday afternoon is shattered by the boom of a ground-shaking blast—followed by another seconds later. One of Atlanta’s busiest and most important neighborhood’s has been bombed—the location of Emory University, two major hospitals, the FBI headquarters, and the CDC.

A diabolical enemy

Medical examiner Sara Linton and her partner Will Trent, an investigator with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, rush to the scene—and into the heart of a deadly conspiracy that threatens to destroy thousands of innocent lives. When the assailants abduct Sara, Will goes undercover to save her and prevent a massacre—putting his own life on the line for the woman and the country he loves.

Review –

“Pediatrician/medical examiner Sara Linton’s path to marrying Will Trent, of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, runs into apocalyptic obstacles only Slaughter could devise.

To begin with, Sara’s mother objects so strenuously to Will that she won’t even utter his name. But her opposition can’t compete with the carnage that erupts when Sara and Will (The Kept Woman, 2016, etc.), hearing the sounds of a bomb near Emory University, rush to the scene and encounter along the way the aftermath of a three-car collision. Stopping to help, they soon smell something amiss, but not soon enough to prevent them from being overpowered and separated by the supposed victims. Will is beaten to the ground; Sara is whisked off in a car whose occupants include Michelle Spivey, a scientist with the Centers for Disease Control who was abducted from under her young daughter’s nose a month ago. Arriving at the mountain encampment of the Invisible Patriot Army, a paramilitary cadre determined to make America white again, Sara is first forced to treat the wounds of the men who kidnapped her and then asked by IPA leader Dash to remain so that she can treat an outbreak of measles that’s swept through the children in the camp, including Dash’s daughter, whose mother is Gwen Novak, the daughter of Martin Novak, whose history of anti-government bank robberies has made him a high-value federal prisoner. As Will schemes to infiltrate the camp disguised as a new recruit, Sara is dismayed to find that no matter what she does, the children she’s tending keep getting sicker and sicker. Even the most ardent fans of Slaughter’s white-hot thrillers (Pieces of Her, 2018, etc.) will be shocked and horror-stricken by the outrage Dash has planned.

All the emotional intensity Slaughter’s readers expect, now focused on a diabolical domestic terrorist. Don’t say you weren’t warned.” Kirkus Reviews

Fantastic read from one of my favorite authors!

Two Kinds of Truth (Harry Bosch #20) by Michael Connelly

Book Description:

Published: October 31, 2017

Format: Audio/OverDrive

Harry Bosch is back as a volunteer working cold cases for the San Fernando Police Department and is called out to a local drug store where a young pharmacist has been murdered. Bosch and the town’s 3-person detective squad sift through the clues, which lead into the dangerous, big business world of pill mills and prescription drug abuse.

Meanwhile, an old case from Bosch’s LAPD days comes back to haunt him when a long-imprisoned killer claims Harry framed him, and seems to have new evidence to prove it. Bosch left the LAPD on bad terms, so his former colleagues aren’t keen to protect his reputation. He must fend for himself in clearing his name and keeping a clever killer in prison.

The two unrelated cases wind around each other like strands of barbed wire. Along the way Bosch discovers that there are two kinds of truth: the kind that sets you free and the kind that leaves you buried in darkness.

Review –

Just finished listening to this installment of the Harry Bosch series by Michael Connelly, and I loved it. As you may remember the character of Harry Bosch is one of my favorites.

In this one, number twenty in the series, Harry Bosch juggles yet another cold case turned flaming red hot with the sort of brand-new case that would be routine for anyone but him.

Thirty years ago, Harry  was sure that Preston Borders had raped and murdered three young women. The district attorney’s office, less confident about two of the cases, still managed to convict Borders of killing Danielle Skyler. A jury gave him the death penalty, and he’s been sitting in San Quentin ever since. Now, however, it looks as if he may get out, and not because he’s been executed. An analysis of the evidence that went unexamined back in 1988 has identified the DNA on Danielle’s pajama bottoms as that of Lucas John Olmer, who died in a different prison and never met Borders. Under the guidance of sharp-practice lawyer Lance Cronyn, Borders has filed a habeas corpus petition, made a new statement accusing Harry of planting evidence against him, and expressed a serious interest in suing everyone in sight. Harry has only nine days before the habeas hearing to defuse this ticking bomb. But how can he possibly find the time to work the case when the murder of José Esquivel Sr. and Jr., a pharmacist and his son, at their family business has swept the San Fernando Police Department—where Bosch, booted off the LAPD, is now volunteering—into a hurricane of fraudulent oxycodone prescriptions and provoked Bosch to agree for the first time in his life to go undercover as an addict and potential drug mule? You have to keep in mind in the forty years that Harry has worked in law enforcement he has never been undercover and he is now over 65. I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall to watch his performance!

The author, Michael Connelly, is a genius when it comes to juggling these two cases and tying up loose ends of another kind to boot. I am not a fan of courtroom scenes but Mr. Connelly has written one that had my blood pumping and standing uptown cheer.

Another great read!!!!!

The Likeness (Dublin Murder Squad #2) by Tana French

Book Description:

Published: July 17, 2008

Format: Audio/OverDrive

The haunting follow up to the Edgar Award-winning debut In the Woods

Tana French astonished critics and readers alike with her mesmerizing debut novel, In the Woods. Now both French and Detective Cassie Maddox return to unravel a case even more sinister and enigmatic than the first. Six months after the events of In the Woods, an urgent telephone call beckons Cassie to a grisly crime scene. The victim looks exactly like Cassie and carries ID identifying herself as Alexandra Madison, an alias Cassie once used. Suddenly, Cassie must discover not only who killed this girl, but, more importantly, who is this girl? A disturbing tale of shifting identities, The Likeness firmly establishes Tana French as an important voice in suspense fiction.

Review –

I am experiencing a wicked headache so I am borrowing words from KIRKUS REVIEW. I loved this book and gave it five stars on GoodReads.

“The discovery of her murdered doppelgänger leads a Dublin detective to insert herself into the victim’s life.

Cassandra Maddox, the Irish cop introduced in French’s In the Woods (2007), gets an urgent call from her homicide-detective boyfriend Sam O’Neill. She is to drop everything, disguise herself and hustle to a murder scene that has clearly left Sam shaken. His distress is understandable. The corpse in the abandoned cottage outside the depressed suburban village of Glenskehy is a dead ringer for Cassie. Stranger still, the name on the victim’s ID is Lexie Madison, the same name Cassie used during a long, dangerous, undercover operation. Before she was stabbed, Lexie was one of five residents, all Trinity University students, living in Whitethorn House, a mansion inherited by one of the students. Frank Mackey, Cassie’s tough supervisor from her days in undercover, thinks the best bet for solving the Lexie murder case is to withhold news of the death from the public. This way, Cassie can pose as Lexie and perhaps get to the bottom of what happened. There are enough clues to Lexie’s life in her phone camera that Cassie, against Sam’s better judgment, takes the challenge. Several days later, armed and wired for sound, Cassie is dropped off at Whitethorn, where she is taken back into what proves to be a very tightly knit group. There is dark, brilliant Daniel, who owns the house, gay Justin, clever Abby and beautiful Rafe. Using the formidable acting skills that made her so successful in undercover work, Cassie seems able to convince the friends that she is Lexie. As she begins to reconstruct the events leading up to the murder, she finds herself sucked into the group, and her loyalties begin to shift.

Police procedures, psychological thrills and gothic romance beautifully woven into one stunning story.”

Me again -While the crime is solved, the killer is presumed to be Daniel BUT I’m not too sure and there were a few other things that were left hanging too, like who was the father of Lexie’s baby?  But that aside, it is a fantastic read/and the audio book narrator was delightful to listen to.

Bound (True Desires #1) by Sasha White

Book Description:

Published: June 14, 2016

The strongest way to be Bound, is by emotion.

Everybody has a dark side. I just never expected mine to come out in my sexuality. But in that quiet time before I drift off to sleep the images that come into my mind shock even me. You see, I’ve always been the good girl. The steady one, the responsible one, but ever since I set eyes on Joe Carson, the dreams have turned into urges… a restlessness I can’t resist.

So I don’t.

No one is more shocked than me when after putting on a private show of self love for Joe, I tell him I’ll do anything for him… and he holds me to it.

I admit it. I’m an addict.

I’m addicted to the freedom that I find in his arms…and I’m worried it might cost me the freedom from small town existence I’ve been working towards my whole life.

Review –

Format: 50860-kindle-3-box

There is more to Katie than meets the eye and Joe Carson is not what he seems. They are sexually drawn to each other and a semi-relationship beings. Beside the hot sex, there is a story line of theft in a casino and an ex-boyfriends’s new girlfriend. The author made everything flow perfectly.

If I had to categorize Bound, I would say that it was erotica with an HEA and by that, I mean, that there is a satisfactory emotional ending. While not a romance per se,  it has enough romantic elements to satisfy any romance lover.

This is a very steamy, edgy tale with explicit sex scenes. With lust, suspense and so much more. I couldn’t put it down and if you like this genre, you won’t either.

Review –
Simon West is an undercover law enforcement officer out to get a bad guy for international espionage when he bumps into Dr. Winslow  outside of an elevator and later that night accepts  her dare to be the third in an MMF menage.  She has no idea that Simon knows all about her and that her current boyfriend is the bad guy he’s after. After the explicit sex scenes, which are  totally relevant and act as the catalyst for the story that follows, he is asked to leave and Katrina finds out her boyfriend is a married man and has been using for to get at her research.
She is fired from her job and an arrest warrant issued because she has been set up by the douche bag ex-boyfriend.
Simon does what he can to help her and can’t seem to keep his hands off of her.
Against his better judgment, Simon pursues Katrina. Relentlessly. All the while knowing he has no business falling for her or doing everything in his power to make her fall for him. There are too many secrets he can’t reveal. If she finds out the half of what he’s done or what he’s up to now it will not only devastate her, it just may get her killed.
Eventually. she does find out and it’s not pretty but later she agrees to wear a wire and get the bad guy to confess and it all works out for everyone, except of course, the bad guy.
Simon is a strong sexual male with knock them dead green eyes and his chemistry with Katrina is epic. I expected the pages to combust at any time.
It was a great read with a great story line and hot hot hot sex!
This is the first time I have read anything by Karin Tabke, but it won’t be the last.

Review –

This book starts off like the 1st- with an intro from the POV of the killer.

Kate and Jax agree to  begin to embark  on their undercover work at the BDSM club. In preparation for this there is some REALLY HOT STEAMY  sex that takes place.

Kate still has some lingering feelings for her boss, Nick, but he seems to be conceding to the fact that she has feelings for Jaxon. It’s a very interesting dynamic between the three of them.

We start to find out things about Jax’s past as Alyssa’s funeral takes place. Just when Kate starts to put her guard down she find out things that make her question everything. There was another murder in the past with the same M.O. and  could be connected to Jax.

On top of her own reluctance to fully submit to Jax, she is still holding onto her secrets. I am dying to know what she is hiding!

But all of this isn’t nearly as important as what happens in the end. Can you say CLIFFHANGER?

Can’t wait to read the next installment.

Review –

I enjoyed reading this free  book but was disappointed that it was so short(103 pages).  I understand the author’s thinking that if you like it enough you’ll be willing to buy the next in the series. But, I don’t know if I want to spend money for a book that is only about a hundred pages long and then have to buy another and another to complete the series.  Instead, why not write one long book and charge a reasonable price? It’s a shame because I really liked the two main characters and their intense chemistry together and a bad guy has turned up that I didn’t expect. That being said, I don’t plan to go any further with this series.
