Review –

“Usha is convinced that the Evil Eye, a curse that brings continuous misfortune, was cast upon her daughter, Pallavi, in the womb. What else could have possibly left her driven, career-oriented daughter edging closer and closer to 30 without a prospective husband? Determined to set Pallavi on the right path, Usha arranges date after date with potential suitors—but after yet another setup fails, it seems her efforts are proving fruitless. But in an unexpected turn of events, Pallavi becomes her own matchmaker when she meets—and quickly falls for—Sandeep, a young Indian-American entrepreneur. And though she expects her mother will be elated with her finally finding a man, Pallavi is distraught and confused to find her mother growing increasingly suspicious of Sandeep’s motives…and his true identity.

Told through a series of phone calls and voicemails, this Audible Original penned by award-winning rising star playwright Madhuri Shekar transitions seamlessly from a light-hearted family dramedy to an unexpectedly supernatural thriller. With an endearing cast of well-rounded characters, sharp, natural dialogue, and a shocking edge-of-your-seat climax, Evil Eye is a can’t-miss tale about cultural miscommunications, family secrets, and the lingering echoes of trauma.

Please note: This audio contains strong language, distressing situations, and descriptions of abuse and violence that some listeners may find upsetting. Discretion is advised.” Audible Originals

Fantastic short story that will keep you captivated from beginning to end.

Scott Brick, the man with the golden voice, perfectly captures the experience of hearing a classic ghost story told around the campfire.

Review –

I was excited to grab this free horror story off of Audible last month. I’d just finished up a novel, and was in the mood for something quick to listen to while knitting a scarf, so I hit play on this short story.

Lullaby is about a husband and a wife who decide to move into a house they are told is haunted because the price was just too low to resist. They’re about to welcome into the world their new daughter, Hope, and this home seems perfect. It’s not too long before they start to see why the price was so low, and why the realtor was obliged to tell them that the place was haunted.

This short story is bleak, dark, and creepy. The haunted house presented here is not given a life of its own at all, and has no real presence itself, but the way the author described the haunted aspects of the story were unsettling. The finale that it builds towards hit me like a punch to the gut.

Scott Brick – who I’ve come to learn in my short time becoming an audiobook “connoisseur” is the most divisive narrator in the business – did an excellent job with this material. I loved his approach, which went from playful in the beginning, to haunting in the middle, and then powerful in the end. He displayed an impressive range in less than 40 minutes of narration.

Lullaby did more than I expected. It delivered on a creepy, quick tale, but it also went to much darker places than I could have imagined, and though it won’t be for everyone (trigger warning for those that don’t like to see children in peril), I thoroughly enjoyed it, and am happy I selected it for my Audible Original last month.

Pigeons From Hell by Robert E. Howard

Book Description:

Published: October 27, 2015

Format: Audio

Robert E. Howard, best known as the creator of Conan the Barbarian, also wrote stories in a diverse range of genres. He was particularly masterful with horror stories. This 1938 spell-binding story is one of his best. In 1983, Stephen King, wrote that he considered Pigeons from Hell to be “one of the finest horror stories of our century.” With a decaying Southern family, a gruesome murder, a strange sort of “undead” creature, and, of course, evil pigeons, it makes for a story that will send a chill down your backbone.

Review –

I’m sorry but if what the blurb above says is true and this is one of the author’s best short stories, I’d hate to read the others. AND, though I love and admire Mr. Stephen King, he is dead wrong about this story.

I kept waiting for the scary, creepy, backbone-chilling part, but it never came.

All in all, it was just around spooky story to share around a campfire or read during the month of October .

Not impressed but I do like the cover art.

Rough to Ride by Justine Elvira

Book Description:

This isn’t a full-length biker novel. You aren’t going to get a love story, or an MC story with a beginning, middle, and end. This is a short story. 10,000+ words of a hot, sexy biker, and the woman he meets stranded on the road. It’s sexy, lustful, and HOT. It’s the fifteen-minute quickie every woman needs. So get on the back of Maverick’s bike, and join him and Trixie on their sexy encounter.

*Recommended for 17+ for mature themes and content.

Review –

Melanie is a girl who likes to change things up or else she gets bored. She’s been with Johnny for eight years and she thinks he is losing interest because he isn’t touching her as he usually does and she has to do something about it.

She goes for a ride in a an area where there is nothing in sight for miles. Her car breaks down and her cell phone is dead. She gets out of the car and sits on the hood to cool off. She can’t help it if the white sun dress she’s wearing is low-cut and that the hem rides up.

After a while she hears the rumble of a motorcycle and Maverick rides up (she doesn’t know his name at this point) and after very little talking and telling him her name is Trixie, he has sex with her (not intercourse, use your imagination). He tells her he wants to take her back to his clubhouse and have actual sex with her and that’s what they do, numerous times. Then all hell breaks loose and there are gun shots and Maverick has to go attend to business, as he is President of the MC club. That’s when we find out that Melanie AND Johnny (who was Maverick ) were role-playing and it worked. Their togetherness is saved and they are not bored with each other any longer.

I loved it. Very hot and has a MC rider, what else could you want?

Drunken Fireworks by Stephen King

Book Description:

Published: June 30, 2015

Only on audio! A brand-new, never-before-published Stephen King short story unavailable in any other format!

Alden McCausland and his mother are what they call “accident rich”; thanks to an unexpected life-insurance policy payout and a winning Big Maine Millions scratcher, Alden and his Ma are able to spend their summers down by Lake Abenaki, idly drinking their days away in a three-room cabin with an old dock and a lick of a beach.

Across the lake, they can see what “real rich” looks like: the Massimo family’s Twelve Pines Camp, the big white mansion with guest house and tennis court that Alden’s Ma says is paid for by “ill-gotten gains” courtesy of Massimo Construction. When Alden’s holiday-weekend sparklers and firecrackers set off what over the next few years comes to be known as the Fourth of July Arms Race, he learns how far he and the Massimos will go to win an annual neighborly rivalry—one that lands Alden in the Castle County jail.

Read by beloved Down East storyteller Tim Sample—praised by Stephen King for his “wit and talent and good-heartedness”—Drunken Fireworks makes for explosive audio listening.

Review –

Fantastic short story about the trials and tribulations of one-upmanship (my made up word for the day.

The characters were brought to life by narrator, Tim Sample, who did a magnificent job with the Maine dialect and made listening to the story a real pleasure. So like Stephen King, you never see the end coming. I loved it!!!

Hot Ink (Inked In The Steel City #1) by Ranae Rose

🙂 I usually don’t post out-of-order but I’m going out-of-town today and I had this one finished and Volume 2 of Bound to You will have to wait until I get back.

Book Description:

Published: December 14, 2011

Mina never meant to fall for her sexy tattoo artist, Eric, or to become a model. But when she’s asked to pose in a photo shoot for the Hot Ink tattoo studio, she can’t say no. She finally gets a look at Eric’s tattoos when they’re cajoled into posing together, and in a few breathtaking moments, an on-camera kiss turns the passion they’re asked to fake into something very real, leaving them both wanting more. The only problem is that Mina’s not the glamour girl she looks like on the Hot Ink posters, or even in a tattoo magazine. She’s only twenty-four, but being the sole guardian of her disabled younger sister has left her feeling much older. Will Eric still be interested when he gets to know the girl behind the ink and the make-up and finds out that she and her little sister are a package deal?

Review –

This is a sweet( really, it is) romance about a 20 something girl with 40 something responsibilities. She has guardianship of her fourteen year old sister who was tragically hurt in an auto accident when she was seven. The girl’s mother was driving drunk and crashed the car and Mina was hurt badly also which left thick ugly scars on her upper thigh. Mina doesn’t think the hot tattoo artist Eric, would be interested in her because of said responsibilities. Little does she know, he wants to be more!

It’s a short story (I wish it had been longer)  the romance wasn’t  rushed or over the top and the sex was light and near the end.

It was a pleasant read.

In The Tall Grass by Stephen King and Joe Hill

Book Description:

Published: October 9, 2012

As USA TODAY said of Stephen King’s Mile 81: Park and scream. Could there be any better place to set a horror story than an abandoned rest stop?”

In the Tall Grass begins with a sister and brother who pull off to the side of the road after hearing a young boy crying for help from beyond the tall grass. Within minutes they are disoriented, in deeper than seems possible, and they lost one another. The boy’s cries are more and more desperate. What follows is a terrifying, entertaining, and masterfully told tale, as only Stephen King can deliver.

Review –

This is a very short story that will keep you from stopping on any deserted highway and walking into tall grass. Very spooky. I loved it.

Red Run: A Short Story by Kami Garcia

16159071Product Description:

Published: November 15, 2012

Everyone in the Louisiana backwoods knows never to drive down Red Run at night, especially Edie. Her brother was murdered by the ghost that haunts the road — a ghost Edie is hunting.

Suspense and Southern gothic meet in this modern ghost story, where nothing is what it seems.

Review:

It was a good read for a creepy short story but not the best of the DON’T DRIVE DOWN THIS ROAD AT NIGHT  genre.
