A Lesson in Thorns (Thornchapel #1) by Sierra Simone

Book Description:

Published: March 19, 2019

Format: Audio/Scribd

Stars: 5

When librarian Poe Markham takes the job at Thornchapel, she only wants two things: to stay away from Thornchapel’s tortured owner, Auden Guest, and to find out what happened to her mother twelve years ago. It should be easy enough—keep her head down while she works in the house’s crumbling private library and while she hunts down any information as to why this remote manor tucked into the fog-shrouded moors would be the last place her mother was seen alive. But Thornchapel has other plans for her…

As Poe begins uncovering the house’s secrets, both new and old, she’s also pulled into the seductive, elegant world of Auden and his friends—and drawn to Auden’s worst enemy, the beautiful and brooding St. Sebastian. And as Thornchapel slowly tightens its coil of truths and lies around them, Poe, Auden and St. Sebastian start unravelling into filthy, holy pleasure and pain. Together, they awaken a fate that will either anoint them or leave them in ashes…
From the author of the USA Today bestselling New Camelot series comes an original fairy tale full of ancient mysteries, lantern-lit rituals, jealousy, money, murder, sacred torment, and obsessions that last for lifetimes…

Review –

First off, if dirty filthy talk and sex scenes offend you DO NOT read this book.

There’s a little bit of love for everyone in this diverse M/F, M/M, F/F, M/M/F orgy, and holy HOT tamale, was it a sinfully sexy scorcher!

Thornchapel is a mystery and it has an unexplainable pull that sucks you in like gravity. Six children went on an adventure and found themselves in the mystical ruins of the chapel… and years later, now as adults, they find the same pull leading them to the same place they met at as kids.

There is a higher power at play and ancient pagan rituals that have the heir, the dreamer, the priest, the genius, the socialite and the saint binded and bloodied by thorns keeping them anchored to this magical place and captivated by each other. I couldn’t even tell you why because Thornchapel hasn’t revealed all of its secrets yet but I am completely fascinated by this story. The story ends on a giant cliffhanger, so be forewarned. I’m now listening to a book in a different genre so I can decompress before listening to the next installment .

The way the author, Sierra Simone, weaves her words is hypnotic all on its own. This lady could make her grocery list sound poetic and mesmerizing. This is my first book of  hers I’ve tried and it was the cover that first drew me in. Some cover, huh ?

Heated (Most Wanted #2) by J. Kenner

Book Description:

Published: June 3, 2014

I knew better than to risk my heart.
But fierce passion comes at a high price.

I grew up believing in right and wrong, good and evil, black and white. I knew better than to trust. And then I met Tyler Sharp.

Bold, charming, and dangerously sexy, Tyler always gets what he wants. But his smile can be deceiving, his dealings sordid, his ambitions ruthless. I thought I was the one woman strong enough to resist him, but our need for each other was too urgent to deny.

One look and I was in trouble. One touch and I was hooked. One night and I became his.

And now that I’ve fallen, there’s no going back.

Review –

HEATED is the second installment in J. Kenner’s contemporary romance, adult Most Wanted erotic series focusing on three friends and the women they love-Evan Black, Tyler Sharp and Cole August-three friends who bonded as young adults and now earn a living with legitimate and illegitimate enterprises, but this is the first one I’ve read.

This book deals with  Chicago entrepreneur Tyler Sharp and Indianapolis police detective Sloane Watson’s storyline.

On medical leave from the Indianapolis Police Department, Sloane goes on the hunt for a missing friend whose last known whereabouts were listed as an exotic dancer at a gentlemen’s club in Chicago known as Destiny-enter Tyler Sharp-the owner and proprietor who is the number one suspect on Sloane’s list of suspects. Going undercover as a stripper is easier said than done when Sloane’s real identity has been known to Tyler all along. It is only when she reveals the true nature of her ‘private investigation’ does Tyler begin to understand-Tyler’s past and that of Cole and Evan are shrouded in mystery, illegal activity and underground connections and Sloane is determined to prove their guilt.

The relationship between Sloane and Tyler is sexual, sensual, exotic and hot. HEATED is an erotic series and a good portion of the storyline is sex, the build up to sex and more sex. Our leading couple has one thing in common and great sex is something that cannot be ignored. The love scenes are intimate, intense and did I mention HOT!  Tyler Sharp is a man who needs control both in and out of the bedroom.

The other  characters include Tyler’s friends Cole and Evan as well as some of the ladies of which Tyler has ‘invested’. There is more to Tyler Sharp than an exotic dance club-the man is an enigma that Sloane is slowly unraveling bit by bit.

Five stars *****

Crash Into Me (Heart of Stone #1) by K.M. Scott

Book Description:

Published: August 25, 2013

What would you give up for everything?

Tristan Stone was powerful, commanding, sex incarnate. And he wore it all so well. From the moment his mesmerizing gaze met mine, I had no choice but surrender to everything he was. His power. His decadence. His passion. He was all I never knew I needed.

He wanted to possess me, and I wanted to be his everything. All I had to do was accept what he offered. But everything has a price.

The world he gave me fulfilled my wildest dreams, but would that be enough when the past crashed into the present?

Review –

I’ll start off my saying that I loved this book. It had believable characters, drama, steamy sex scene, but overly kinky, and a cliffhanger ending.   That being said, at times I thought that it was trying to be a Fifty Shades of Grey, but depending on how you look at it maybe that’s not a bad thing.

Fast read.

Review –
Gabriel thinks Elizabeth has kidnapped the son, Andrew, but she didn’t.  (Leave it to Gabe to jump to conclusions again)
There is a LOT of arguing and loud yelling going on in this book and at one point Gabriel physically hurts himself when in anger he destroys his dressing room.
Elizabeth wants to work for his competitor and long known enemy and he sees red. He decides to see a shrink and sees the error of hs ways and lets her go to work.  She is bullied by an old co-worker and she starts taking marital arts lessons.
On a date night to the theater there is a murder attempt on their lives and a body-guard takes the hit. It’s discovered so set the fire(they find his body in one of the tunnels) and that the old co-worker is the sniper.  Gabe sends Elizabeth and Andrew to NY for safety but Brian follows and attempts to kill Andrew and Elizabeth but he is shot dead by Marisol, an ex-CIA operative working in the Storm hone.
By the end of the book Gabe and Elizabeth have come to a compromise and all is well until an early morning phone call informing him and Jake and Bri(his sister) are missing in Brazil and that a category five hurricane is head their way.
Looking forward to the next installment.

Three Ways: A Detective Seagate and Miner Mystery #4 by Mike Markel

Book Description

May 13, 2014
When grad student Austin Sulenka is found strangled, nude on his bed, the first question for Detectives Karen Seagate and Ryan Miner is whether it was an auto-asphyxiation episode gone wrong. Evidence strewn around his small apartment suggests that he spent his last night with a number of different women. One is Tiffany, a former student who still resents the injustice of getting a C in the course when he promised her a B if she slept with him. Another is Austin’s beautiful girlfriend, May, who had never before encountered a man she could not totally beguile. Then there is Suzannah Montgomery, his thesis adviser, who might have inadvertently revealed to Austin some information about her past that could ruin her own career. As Seagate and Miner try to unravel the complicated couplings, she finds herself in a three-way relationship that threatens to destroy her own fragile sobriety.
Review –
This was my first reading of anything by author Mike Markel and I liked it very much because it’s a good “who-dun-it” without too much complexity to it as to bog it down. It flowed well and the characters were well-developed.
I will definitely be going back to locate the earlier books in the series.
Good read.

These creatures hunt in daylight, and are as fast and strong as vampires. If they bite you, you become just like them. And round and round it goes… Where will it stop?
Even Anita Blake doesn’t know.
Review –
I liked this installment of the Anita Blake,Vampire Hunter series much much better than I did the last one. Unlike in it, Anita had a big part to play in the plot and there was not as much sex for sex sake. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy sex scenes in books but not when they happen on every other page.
I wil continue to be a fan of Laurell K. Hamilton and await the next Anita Blake book.

Into the Dreaming (Highlander)by Karen Marie Moning

Book Description

Publication Date:April 24, 2012
For the first time in hardcover, here is #1 New York Times bestselling author Karen Marie Moning’s novella Into the Dreaming, a tale of Highland fantasy, star-crossed lovers, and the timeless manipulation of the ancient, immortal Unseelie king. This is Moning at her romantic, funniest finest. Free him from his ice-borne hell . . . Stolen from his beloved home in the Highlands of Scotland, imprisoned in the Unseelie king’s dark, frosty kingdom, Aedan MacKinnon endured centuries of torture before becoming the icy, emotionless Vengeance, the dark king’s dispatcher of death and destruction in the mortal realm. And in his century you both may dwell . . . Aspiring romance novelist Jane Sillee has always believed that she was born in the wrong century, but she’s managed to make a decent enough life for herself—if only she could stop having those recurring dreams about a man too perfect to exist. In the Dreaming you have loved him . . . Haunted every night of her life by a devastatingly sexy Highlander who comes to her while she sleeps, Jane tries to write him out of her head and heart. As a child he protected her, as a woman he loves her. Now in the Waking you must save him . . . When an ancient tapestry bearing the likeness of her beloved Highlander arrives on her doorstep, Jane is whisked back in time to fifteenth-century Scotland, to the castle of Dun Haakon on the isle of Skye, where she is given one chance to save her dream lover . . . or lose him forever to the Unseelie king. Caught in a deadly game between the light and dark courts of the Fae, Jane must find a way through the ice to the heart of her Highander. But will the love of one mortal woman be enough to defeat such ancient and ruthless immortal enemies?  From the Hardcover version.

I chose the audio version of this book and I loved listening to the narrator speak with a Scottish accent. (Swoon) The story itself was very short (only three CD’s) but it was very good and since this is the first time I’ve tried a Highlander storyline I was quite pleased. If you’re a fan of Karen Marie Moning you should give this a try. Warning: There is sexual content.

This book is intended for mature audiences.

Review –

I enjoyed this book as much as I did the first, not so much because of the plot(yes, there is one) but by the main characters and their interactions.  There is sex in this book also but it is not as graphic or explicit as the first.  Now on the third. Can’t wait.

Kiss the Dead (Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter #21) by Laurell K. Hamilton

Book Description

Publication Date: June 5, 2012 | Series: Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter (Book 21)
When a fifteen-year-old girl is abducted by vampires, it’s up to U.S. Marshal Anita Blake to find her. And when she does, she’s faced with something she’s never seen before: a terrifyingly ordinary group of people—kids, grandparents, soccer moms—all recently turned and willing to die to avoid serving a master. And where there’s one martyr, there will be more…
But even vampires have monsters that they’re afraid of. And Anita is one of them…
This book was a real let down and didn’t live up to others in the series for me. Now, I’m still a fan of Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter but she really had no real purpose in this plot.  The case she was working on involved a few vamps and once they were disposed of that was it and she went  “home” with her lovers and others and it was like the sky opened up and a light flashed and said “let there be sex”  The End.
I’m thinking LKH may be bringing Anita to the end of her run.  Only time will tell.

Review –

I thought I had already read this book but I guess I was dreaming  because I couldn’t  find it on any reading logs so I read it this week and it was just as good as the others in the MacKayla Lane Series but it seems to take me forever to get through it even though it only took a couple of days.  There is a lot of paranormal fantasy involved and strange names and a lot of characters  of keep track of. The story took twists and turns and just when you thought you knew what was happening you would turn the page and something entirely different was shaping up.  I love this series and I think I read that the author is not intending a 6th book perse but they are others coming that will involve some of the same characters.  I’m looking forward to it.
