Chosen to Die (To Die #2) by Lisa Jackson

Book Description:

Format: Audio/Audible

HE’LL CHOOSE THEM…
Detective Regan Pescoli has worked the “Star Crossed Killer” case for months, never imagining she’d be captured by the madman she’s been hunting. Regan knows exactly what he’s capable of – and avoiding the same fate will take every drop of her courage and cunning.

ABDUCT THEM…
Regan Pescoli is unlike any woman Nate Santana has met before. But now she’s missing, and Nate knows something is dangerously wrong. The only person who can help him find her is Detective Selena Alvarez, Regan’s partner. As Nate and Selena dig deeper into the Star-Crossed Killer case and the body count rises, the truth about Regan’s disappearance becomes chillingly clear.

AND KILL THEM…
In the desolate Montana woods, evil is lurking. And with time running out, the only way to save Regan will be to get inside a killer’s twisted mind and unravel a shocking message that is being revealed, one body at a time…

Review –

Chosen To Die is a thrilling mystery with the isolated setting adding to the suspense generated by the plot. The reason for the killer taking Regan also contributes to the puzzle: his previous victims had been trusting, relatively helpless women. Why choose Regan, a detective who would almost certainly fight back with everything she had? The only serious flaw in the book is with its length; Regan and Selena are compelling, well drawn characters that are interesting to follow. But there are other characters and side stories that add little to the plot and ultimately detract from the suspense of the detectives’ investigation. It would seem these could easily have been edited out, allowing for better continuity and tighter pacing, but that’s OMO.

I loved this book and will soon start the third in the series.

Her Russian Returns (Brie’s Submission #15) by Red Phoenix

Book Description:

Published: August 27, 2017

Format: Audio/Audible

Rytsar Durov should be dead.

But in the BDSM world, loyalties run as deep as kinky passions.
Sir Thane Davis is determined to save his Russian brother, but must call on his friends at the Center to execute the plan.
Clinging to hope, Brie trusts she will see Rytsar again.

There is a promise he must keep…

Review –

Her Russian Returns is number fifteen  in the Brie’s Submission series, they cannot be read out-of-order or as a standalone. However, you can start the series with Teach Me.

Anton Rytsar is our main man in this book, and we follow his journey out of kidnapping, through the beginning of his healing and it set the scene for more action packed drama coming in book number sixteen, In Sir’s Arms, (which I am leaving for a while because the series ends there until the author writes another and I can not bear for this to be the end, even if for a short time)
Although the book did jump from past and present and it wasn’t clear at times where we were, it was a great read and I can’t wait to listen to the next one.

Love You More (Tessa Leoni #1, Detective D.D. Warren #5) by Lisa Gardner

Book Description:

Published: March 8, 2011

Format: Audio/OverDrive

One question, a split-second decision, and Brian Darby lies dead on the kitchen floor. His wife, state police trooper Tessa Leoni, claims to have shot him in self-defense, and bears the bruises to back up her tale. For veteran detective D. D. Warren it should be an open-and-shut case. But where is their six-year-old daughter?

As the homicide investigation ratchets into a frantic statewide search for a missing child, D. D. Warren must partner with former lover Bobby Dodge to break through the blue wall of police brotherhood, seeking to understand the inner workings of a trooper’s mind while also unearthing family secrets. Would a trained police officer truly shoot her own husband? And would a mother harm her own child?

For Tessa Leoni, the worst has not yet happened. She is walking a tightrope, with nowhere to turn, no one to trust, as the clock ticks down to a terrifying deadline. She has one goal in sight, and she will use every ounce of her training, every trick at her disposal, to do what must be done. No sacrifice is too great, no action unthinkable. A mother knows who she loves. And all others will be made to pay.

Review –

Lisa Gardner is a master of the psychological thriller and she is at the top of her game with this book. The story is presented via chapters that alternate between Detective  D.D. Warren’s point of view and State Police Officer Tessa Leoni’s, and it’s a style which serves both the measured unveiling of the story and the tension building very well. It may sound like a cliché, but Love You More truly is a dictionary-definition example of a page turner, packed with action, plot twists, and cliffhanger chapter endings.

If you’re looking for an explosive read that pits two strong, intelligent, determined women against each other (or are they?), you’ll love Love You More. Just remember that nothing is as it seems.

I can’t wait to read more installments of the Tessa Leoni series.

Fantastic read !

Five stars.

Entwined (Iron Bulls MC #3) by Phoenyx Slaughter

Book Description:

Published: February 2, 2016

Format: E-Book

In Entwined, the third book in the Iron Bulls MC series, shocking secrets and desires are revealed. Can Dante and Karina’s passionate bond survive or will they be torn apart?

Review –

Not much of a blurb on this one and it’s a bit misleading.

Karina and Dante’s relationship keeps getting stronger and he’s trying to get her half sister’s info from Tucker, Karina’s father. He says the half sister doesn’t know anything about Karina and that’s she’s “wild child” and could be a bad influence of her. Dante doesn’t seem too concerned which alerts me to BIG TROUBLE ahead.

Dante wants to push Karina’s boundaries so enlisted Luck to introduce her to bondage. She likes it but they don’t get far because she enters subspace so fast that she couldn’t vocalize her safe word if she needed to.

Tucker missed Karin’s high school graduation and it affects her more than she thought. Also, Athena turns eighteen that day so Romeo is chomping at the bit to get his hands on her.

No cliffhanger this time. Just an anticipated meeting with Kadence, the half-sister. But Dante remembers Tucker’s warning about her wildness and her mother’s involvement with a rival MC and decides that when the meeting happens it will be on his turf so he can keep Karina safe.

Great read.

The Coldest Girl In Coldtown by Holly Black

Book Description

September 3, 2013
Tana lives in a world where walled cities calledColdtowns exist. In them, quarantined monsters and humans mingle in adecadently bloody mix of predator and prey. The only problem is, once you pass throughColdtown’s gates, you can never leave.

One morning, after a perfectly ordinary party, Tana wakes up surrounded by corpses. The only other survivors of this massacre are her exasperatingly endearing ex-boyfriend, infected and on the edge, and a mysterious boy burdened with a terrible secret. Shaken and determined, Tana enters a race against the clock to save the three of them the only way she knows how: by going straight to the wicked, opulent heart of Coldtown itself.
The Coldest Girl in Coldtown is a wholly original story of rage and revenge, of guilt and horror, and of love and loathing from bestselling and acclaimed author Holly Black.
Review –
Even though this book was written as a stand-alone, I wish the author, Holly Black, would consider writing a sequel. (It is sooo good)
Though this is “another” vampire story, it is unlike any you may have read so far. There are Coldtowns across the country to keep vampires and those infected with vampirism separate from the rest of the population. Sounds simple, but those aren’t the only people drawn to a Coldtown. Those who, for no other reason than they just want to be a vampire, arrive daily with the hopes of being turned into a vampire and live forever. They soon find out that it’s not that simple and Coldtown is not as it is depicted in the media.
My favorite character is Gavriel, who is a very old vampire and is saved by Tana in the beginning  and together(plus others) go to a Coldtown.  Besides being blood thirty he is a romantic and has a wonderful accent.(I had the audio version).
If you’re looking forward an unusual vampire story – this is the one for you.
I rated it 5 stars *****

The Abused Werewolf Rescue Group by Catherine Jinks

Product Description

I still hadn’t fully absorbed the terrible possibility that I might actually be a werewolf. A werewolf. I kept stumbling over that word; it made no sense to me. How could I be a werewolf? Werewolves didn’t exist.

When Tobias Richard Vandevelde wakes up in hospital with no memory of the night before, his horrified mother tells him that he was found by the police. At Featherdale Park. In a dingo pen

As if that isn’t weird enough, suddenly a very menacing looking guy and a priest show up at his door.

As the mystery unfolds, Toby finds himself keeping company with some very strange and sickly looking people – members of a suburban vampire support group. And when he’s abducted in broad daylight, he will need all their help to break free … and to come to terms with his own incredibly rare condition.

Review-

For most of this book I was not sure if it was a serious story or meant to be humorous- because, think about it, Toby wakes up in a dingo pen, he has no memory how he got there, the doctor is testing him for epilepsy and then a priest tells him he’s a werewolf and he would need to be locked up in a wine celler the next full moon.

Once he’s allowed to go home, he leaves his house, against his mother’s orders, and meets up with two pals and tells them what the priest had said.  They later part ways and Toby is hijacked off the street and ends up in the Outback in a cell and chained up.

Okay, I was good with it til then but when Dannycomes to the house with the cells below ground with his killer dogs and lies to Toby about  not  having a phone and saying that Reuben(a werewolf too amd a friend of the priest) is coming but it will take at least nine hours to get there I begin to wonder if  Danny isn’t a bad guy and in on  the kidnapping and maybe Reuben was the leader of the gang that sponsors “werewolf fights to the death”, but I was wrong-finally in a very round-about way we find out Reuben is a good guy and we meet others who are  werewolves and ARE YOU READY- vampires.  Not only that but a vampire bites a werewolf and he turns into a zombie. SEE WHAT I MEAN?

The book was entertaining and a very fast read and I’m glad to have it added to my list of books for the year.
