Nobody’s Perfect (Rescue Me Saga #3) By Kallypso Masters

Book Description

September 17, 2012
NOBODY’S PERFECT is the continuing story of Savannah Gentry (now Savi Baker) and Damian Orlando from MASTERS AT ARMS & NOBODY’S ANGEL (Rescue Me Saga #1) and NOBODY’S HERO (#2).Savannah/Savi escaped eleven years of abuse at the hands of her father and finally made a safe life for herself and her daughter. But when her father once again threatens her peace of mind—and her daughter’s safety—Savi runs to Damian Orlando for protection. Eight years earlier as Savannah, she shared one perfect day with Damian that changed both their young lives and resulted in a secret she no longer can hide. But being with Damian reawakens repressed memories and feelings she wants to keep buried. After witnessing a scene with Damian on Savi’s first night at his private club, however, she begins to wonder if he could help her regain control of her life and reclaim her sexuality and identity.

Damian, a wounded warrior, has had his own dragons to fight in life, but has never forgotten Savannah. He will lay down his life to protect her and her daughter, but doesn’t believe he can offer more than that. She deserves a whole man, something he can never be after a firefight in Iraq. Damian has turned to SM to regain control of his life and emotions and fulfills the role of Service Top to “bottoms” at the club. However, he could never deliver those services to Savi, who needs someone gentle and loving, not the man he has become.

Will two wounded survivors find love and healing in each other’s arms?

ABOUT THE RESCUE ME SAGA: The books in the ongoing Rescue Me Saga are not stand-alone stories and should be read in order. Characters will recur in later books to deal with further issues in their lives as the saga continues and each book builds upon all previous ones. Sometimes main characters even need another book to help resolve major issues affecting their relationships.

BONUS MATERIAL in this version: Kallypso Masters has added the PLAYLIST of music that inspired her as she wrote about the first three couples mentioned in this combined volume, as well as a GLOSSARY OF TERMS and a CAST OF CHARACTERS in these books in the saga.

CONTENT WARNING: Intended for mature adult readers not offended by profanity and graphic (but never gratuitous!) sex scenes. Due to the emotional way in which the author presents the subject matter (past and present), the books might cause triggers while reading. Please read the Author’s Notes at the beginning.

Review –
Though sexual in nature this book also deals with the pain and suffering of abuse and its’ long term effect.

Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan

Book Description

October 2, 2012

A gleeful and exhilarating tale of global conspiracy, complex code-breaking, high-tech data visualization, young love, rollicking adventure, and the secret to eternal life—mostly set in a hole-in-the-wall San Francisco bookstore

The Great Recession has shuffled Clay Jannon out of his life as a San Francisco Web-design drone—and serendipity, sheer curiosity, and the ability to climb a ladder like a monkey has landed him a new gig working the night shift at Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore. But after just a few days on the job, Clay begins to realize that this store is even more curious than the name suggests. There are only a few customers, but they come in repeatedly and never seem to actually buy anything, instead “checking out” impossibly obscure volumes from strange corners of the store, all according to some elaborate, long-standing arrangement with the gnomic Mr. Penumbra. The store must be a front for something larger, Clay concludes, and soon he’s embarked on a complex analysis of the customers’ behavior and roped his friends into helping to figure out just what’s going on. But once they bring their findings to Mr. Penumbra, it turns out the secrets extend far outside the walls of the bookstore.

With irresistible brio and dazzling intelligence, Robin Sloan has crafted a literary adventure story for the twenty-first century, evoking both the fairy-tale charm of Haruki Murakami and the enthusiastic novel-of-ideas wizardry of Neal Stephenson or a young Umberto Eco, but with a unique and feisty sensibility that’s rare to the world of literary fiction. Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore is exactly what it sounds like: an establishment you have to enter and will never want to leave, a modern-day cabinet of wonders ready to give a jolt of energy to every curious reader, no matter the time of day.

Review –

I had the audio version of this book and the narrator, Ari Fliakos, did a fantastic job  and made it a pleasure to listen.

The story has a peculiar plot with peculiar well-defined characters and even though we start out in San Francisco we travel across the country to try to solve the mystery of eternal life and decode the books found on the top shelves in Mr. Penumbra’s Bookstore.

If you love books, computers/technology, nerds, mysteries,  and friendships this is the book for you.

I rated it five stars ***** and I highly recommend it.

Mr. Mercedes: A Novel (Unnamed Trilogy) by Stephen King

Book Description

Published: June 3, 2014

In a mega-stakes, high-suspense race against time, three of the most unlikely and winning heroes Stephen King has ever created try to stop a lone killer from blowing up thousands. In the frigid pre-dawn hours, in a distressed Midwestern city, hundreds of desperate unemployed folks are lined up for a spot at a job fair. Without warning, a lone driver plows through the crowd in a stolen Mercedes, running over the innocent, backing up, and charging again. Eight people are killed; fifteen are wounded. The killer escapes.

In another part of town, months later, a retired cop named Bill Hodges is still haunted by the unsolved crime. When he gets a crazed letter from someone who self-identifies as the perp; and threatens an even more diabolical attack, Hodges wakes up from his depressed and vacant retirement, hell-bent on preventing another tragedy. Brady Hartfield lives with his alcoholic mother in the house where he was born. He loved the feel of death under the wheels of the Mercedes, and he wants that rush again.

Only Bill Hodges, with a couple of highly unlikely allies, can apprehend the killer before he strikes again. And they have no time to lose, because Brady’s next mission, if it succeeds, will kill or maim thousands. Mr. Mercedes is a war between good and evil, from the master of suspense whose insight into the mind of this obsessed, insane killer is chilling and unforgettable.

Review –

This is the first book in a three-part trilogy and I will have to wait til  the early part of next year to read book two.  I can’t stand it!!!

I gave this book 5 stars ***** because it was like a fire in that once it ignited there was no putting it out.  I had the audio version and the narrator did a magnificent job of voicing the characters and the emotions involved in the story. I couldn’t pull myself away. Mr King writes the characters in such a way as to get you to invest in them and follow them along whatever long and curving road they take.  I didn’t expect to cry but I did in one part when a character I was very invested in dies. I couldn’t believe it, but that’s what a great writer does. Surprise the reader around every corner.

Even if you are not a Stephen King fan (is there really such a person) you would enjoy this book. There are no paranormal monsters, or crazy dogs, or haunted hotels. This is a unique story and will grab you and you had better hold on tight.

Endure (Need #4) by Carrie Jones

Product Description:

Published: October 24, 2006

It’s all-out war (and no-holds-barred romance) in the climactic conclusion to Carrie Jones’s bestselling series.

Zara is at the center of an impending apocalypse. True, she’s successfully rescued Nick from Valhalla, but it simply isn’t enough. Evil pixies are ravaging Bedford, and they need much more than one great warrior; they need an army. Zara isn’t sure what her role is anymore. She’s not just fighting for her friends; she’s also a pixie queen. And to align her team of pixies with the humans she loves will be one of her greatest battles yet. Especially since she can’t even reconcile her growing feelings for her pixie king . . .

Unexpected turns, surprising revelations, and one utterly satisfying romantic finale make Endure a thrilling end to this series of bestsellers.

Review –

In this the last installment of the Need Series Nick is rescued by Zara and yes, he hates that now she’s a pixie queen, Zara has to pull together an army and if that means involving humans, then so be it, and she has to come to terms with who she really loves. I was very happy with the way the series ended and highly recommend it if you like young adult, paranormal, love triangle books.

UnRavel Me (Shatter Me #2) by Tahereh Mafi

Book Description

February 5, 2013
Juliette is still haunted by her deadly touch.  But now that she has teamed up with other revels with powers of their own, she’ll be able to fight back against The Reestablishment to save her  broken world.  With the help of these new allies, she’ll also finally learn the secret behind Adam’s  – and Warner’s – immunity to her killer skin.
Unravel Me is perfect  for fans who crave action-packed young adult novels with tantalizing romance like Divergent by Veronica Roth, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, and Legend by Marie Lu.  Ransom Riggs, #1  New York Times bestselling author of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, raves: “A thrilling, high-stakes saga of self-discovery and forbidden love, the Shatter Me series is a must read for fans of dystopian young adult literature – or any literature!”
Review –
This is turning into one of my favorite young adult series of all times.  I’m again listening to the audio version and the narrator does such a top-notch job that you can truly picture all of the characters which makes the entire story come to life. In the paper version the author writes with strike outs and so on the audiobook when a strike out occurs it sounds like chalk running across a blackboard.
As in the first there are many passages that stand out because of the language used. In the following it is Juliette says these words.
1. His breath is melting my blood and splashing across my cheeks.
2. My heart is beating so hard I’m surprised it’s not bleeding.
3. I want to trust but it scares the skin off my bones.
4. I can’t see through the curtain of tears.
5.The jaws of life are stretching their joints-grinding their teeth, yawning themselves awake.
6. The ground looks around, its mouth gapping open.
7. I’m checking my pockets for spare words.
Juliette does say the word WHAT many many many times in the course of the book (the first one too)  and it makes her sound stupid, but I overlook that because it’s just a flaw in her character and no character is perfect.
I love that at the end Juliette is ready to take her gloves off, meaning she is seriously ready to fight against The Reestablishement and mend the broken piece by piece.
Can’t wait for Ignite Me.           I rated this book five stars *****

Cress (The Lunar Chronicles #3) by Marissa Meyer

Published: February 2014      Series: The Lunar Chronicles #3

Rapunzel’s tower is a satellite. She can’t let down her hair – or her guard.
In this third book in the bestselling Lunar Chronicles series, Cinder and Captain Thorne are fugitives on the run, with Scarlet and Wolf in tow. Together, they’re plotting to overthrow Queen Levana and her army.
Their best hope lies with Cress, who has been trapped on a satellite since childhood with only her netscreens as company. All that screen time has made Cress an excellent hacker – unfortunately, she’s just received orders from Levana to track down Cinder and her handsome accomplice.
When a daring rescue goes awry, the group is separated. Cress finally has her freedom, but it comes at a high price. Meanwhile, Queen Levana will let nothing stop her marriage to Emperor Kai. Cress, Scarlet, and Cinder may not have signed up to save the world, but they may be the only ones who can.

Review –

It pays to have a daughter who can get her hands on ARC’s of the popular “to be published” books because when I heard she had this one i put my name of the list of people she promised it to and one day it appeared in my mailbox.

The story takes up where Scarlet has left off and from the first page I could not put it down.  The characters are engaging and the main women characters are strong-willed and the robot is hilarious. The male characters are great also. I can’t wait for the next installment to become available but I know it will be awhile because this one is going to be published until February of next year.

A fellow avid reader and blogger, Julie Graves of had this to say about the book:

With each book and each added character I become more of a fan of these books. Captain Thorne as the worldly rogue and Cress as the innocent and naive make the perfect couple! Cinder and Kai seem like a lost hope with Kai going to marry Levana, but all hope is not lost for them as a couple. Wolf and Scarlet are not very prominent in CRESS, but their relationship has developed and there is a strong bond between them. Then I think my favorite character is the robot Iko! She cracks me up with her antics of trying to be human. She is quite entertaining.

If you haven’t tried The Lunar Chronicles you might want to reconsider.
