Summit Lake by Charlie Donlea

Format: Audio/Audible

Some places seem too beautiful to be touched by horror. Summit Lake, nestled in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains, is that kind of place. But two weeks ago, Becca Eckersley, a first-year law student and daughter of a powerful attorney, was brutally murdered there. Now the town is reeling with grief, and the police are baffled.

At first, investigative reporter Kelsey Castle thinks of the assignment as a fluff piece. But the savagery of the crime, and the efforts to keep it quiet, hint at something far more sinister than a random attack by a stranger. As Kelsey digs deeper, despite danger and warnings, she feels a growing connection to the dead girl. And the more she learns about Becca’s friendships, her love life and her secrets the more convinced she becomes that walking in Becca’s footsteps could lead her out of her own dark past.

Review –

Becca Eckersley’s brutal rape and murder brings journalist Kelsey Castle to Summit Lake. Recovering from her own trauma,(attempted rape and beating while jogging)Kelsey’s boss believes this story is the best way for her to come to grips with her past. She gets full cooperation from the police commander, which is more than she expects. But he’s been one-oped by the State Police and helps her behind the scenes. A young staff doctor provides surprising autopsy information and eventually a partner in finding out the real facts of the case. Flashbacks to Becca’s college life shed some light on what might have happened in the present and inside sources provide even more shocking information regarding Becca. A missing journal may hold the key, but  Kelsey gets roadblocks thrown her way that threaten her ability to discover the truth. But she persists and doesn’t know that retracing the steps of a dead girl with ultimately resolve her own demons and help her come into a new life.

This is a fast-paced page turner and it has teasing plot twists. The authored a fantastic job of giving just the right amount of information at just the right time. It’s refreshing to find a book that has such a well-developed plot and excellent writing to back it up.

Loved it, however I would have liked to seen a relationship develop between Kelsey and the young doctor.

Five stars!

Beneath This Man (The Complete Set) by Lucia Jordan

Book Description:

Format: E-Book

Alexa really, really needs a big break.

She’s been working at the newspaper for five years and she hasn’t had a single byline. She’s sick and tired of doing research and getting coffee. So when Alexa finds out that one of her friends is attending a sex party, she begs to tag along. Alexa has never done anything wild, but for the sake of getting a good story she’ll do whatever it takes, and writing about the underground group sex scene would definitely get attention. The only thing Alexa doesn’t expect is that she’ll meet a man at the party, a man who doesn’t seem like he belongs there either.

Book One was free and, of course, the end was a semi cliffhanger so I HAD to buy the complete set, which consists of four mini books. I say “mini” because they are less than thirty pages each.

Anyway, the story line is not new but Alexa and Luke had a great chemistry so I wanted to see where the author would take them. Where she took them was to a predictable HEA by ways of a pretty boring relationship . I was pretty disappointed because usually books by Lucia Jordan are steamier than this one.

Oh well, live and learn. I’m sure it won’t be the last time I’m pulled into a storyline and shell out money for the other books.

Wicked Lust (The Wicked Horse #2) by Sawyer Bennett

Book Description:

Published: January 15, 2016

Cain Murphy is as big and bad as they come. After serving in the Marines, he’s returned home to Wyoming and now works as head of security at the exclusive sex club, The Wicked Horse. His job is to protect not only the patrons, but to zealously guard the secret existence of the club itself.

Sloane Preston is all about discovering secrets. As an undercover reporter, she’s determined to reveal the truth behind the facade of The Wicked Horse and expose it for all the world to see. She just didn’t count on her pathway into the club coming at the hands of one gorgeously scarred and bad ass bouncer who manages to easily possess her body and soul.

While Cain’s not looking for anyone to catch his eye, Sloane did it all the same, and he’s not bemoaning the fact that she’s as wickedly kinky as he is. As both get caught up in the sinful fantasies that only The Wicked Horse can create, secrets and loyalties will be tested and hearts will risk being broken.

**Warning: this book has sex in it. Lots of sex. Dirty sex. The Wicked Horse Series is a bit different from what Sawyer Bennett normally writes. While you’ll still enjoy fabulous characters, a suspenseful story, some witty banter and an epic romance, there’s just… a lot of sex. You’ve been warned.

Sloane and Cain. They both had a checkered past, with a lot of heartache, and neither of them thought they’d trust someone again. Which made it all the sweeter when it became clear they just couldn’t get enough of each other; without that being all about the sex. There is a lot of politics, secrets, blackmail and some stubborn characters who try to do what’s right, especially when the going gets tough.

Well written, mostly from Cain’s perspective, but with several chapters in Sloan’s point of view as well, Wicked Lust shares most of the characters’ secrets with the readers, while keeping them well hidden from the other characters.

There is an abundance of very kinky sex, and my eyes almost popped out a few times – but it didn’t shock me enough to stop me from reading. The sex scenes along with the  real, solid story around all the sexiness, made Wicked Lust an amazing read!

I read the third book in the series, Wicked Need, Rand’s Story, but I found it boring and very slow and that’s all I’m going to say about it. 31247746
