Review –

This is a FANTASTIC  series and will be made into a television program in 2015 on Fox and I can’t wait.

All of the people of Wayward Pines are there because of one man, who considers himself a God. He  and several hundred people were placed in suspended animation and awakened  1800 years into the future because said he could see the end of the world as humans had known it. When he was “brought back” he and his minions had to rebuild the entire town and put up a high high electrified fence around it to keep out the “abbies”, the abortions of previous humans, who are now monsters  and prey on the new town inhabitants.

Only a handful of people know the truth and Ethan takes it upon himself to tell everyone the real history of the town and of David Pilcher, the man responsible. Some don’t belive at first but eventually they do and when Pilcher  sees that they will all turn against him he does a horrific thing. HE TURNS OFF THE POWER TO THE ENTIRE TOWN INCLUDING THE FENCE THAT KEEPS THEM SAFE.

Book Description

July 17, 2012

With nothing but the clothes on his back—and something horrific snapping at his heels—Jack Winter fled his rural Georgia home when he was still just a boy. Watching the world he knew vanish in a trucker’s rearview mirror, he thought he was leaving an unspeakable nightmare behind forever. But years later, the bright new future he’s built suddenly turns pitch black, as something fiendishly familiar looms dead ahead.

When Jack, his wife Aimee, and their two small children survive a violent car crash, it seems like a miracle. But Jack knows what he saw on the road that night, and it wasn’t divine intervention. The profound evil from his past won’t let them die…at least not quickly. It’s back, and it’s hungry; ready to make Jack pay for running, to work its malignant magic on his angelic youngest daughter, and to whisper a chilling promise: I’ve always been here, and I’ll never leave.

Country comfort is no match for spine-tingling Southern gothic suspense in Ania Ahlborn’s tale of an ordinary man with a demon on his back. Seed plants its page-turning terror deep in your soul, and lets it grow wild.

Review –
A well written horror story to read on a dark night.  It will keep your interest from beginning to end.

Cell by Stephen King

Book Description

Publication Date:January 24, 2006
THERE’S A REASON CELL RHYMES WITH HELL.
On October 1, God is in His heaven, the stock market stands at 10,140, most of the planes are on time, and Clayton Riddell, an artist from Maine, is almost bouncing up Boylston Street in Boston. He’s just landed a comic book deal that might finally enable him to support his family by making art instead of teaching it. He’s already picked up a small (but expensive!) gift for his long-suffering wife, and he knows just what he’ll get for his boy Johnny. Why not a little treat for himself? Clay’s feeling good about the future.
That changes in a hurry. The cause of the devastation is a phenomenon that will come to be known as The Pulse, and the delivery method is a cell phone. Everyone’s cell phone. Clay and the few desperate survivors who join him suddenly find themselves in the pitch-black night of civilization’s darkest age, surrounded by chaos, carnage, and a human horde that has been reduced to its basest nature…and then begins to evolve.
There’s really no escaping this nightmare. But for Clay, an arrow points home to Maine, and as he and his fellow refugees make their harrowing journey north they begin to see crude signs confirming their direction: KASHWAK=NO-FO. A promise, perhaps. Or a threat…
There are one hundred and ninety-three million cell phones in the United States alone. Who doesn’t have one? Stephen King’s utterly gripping, gory, and fascinating novel doesn’t just ask the question “Can you hear me now?” It answers it with a vengeance.
Review –
This was my second reading of this book and I chose an audio version this time and I enjoyed the story even more. Campbell Scott, the narrator did a remarkable job with the voices of  the different characters and all of their emotions throughout the story. (a narrator can make or break an audiobook-I know because I have had to return more than one because of a monotone, lack luster narrator)
The hard cover was published in 2006 and the importance and multitude of cell phones, smart phones, etc. have only increased.  The premise seems very doable to me but thank our stars it’s not because our life on this planet would never be the same.
I didn’t know when I started my re-read that the book was being made into a movie to be released early next year starring John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson and others.  I can’t wait.
Whether or not you’re a fan of Stephen King this is a superb read that is fast-paced, action packed and thought provoking.

Book Description

Publication Date:November 26, 2013
Throughout history there have been several thousand different strains of influenza. Each year hundreds are active. Chances are, this year, you will catch one of those strains. You will cough, sneeze, and your body will ache. Without a second thought, you’ll take a double dose of green liquid, go to bed, and swear you’ll feel better in the morning.
Not this time.
In 1918 forty million people succumbed to a particular strain of swine flu. It appeared out of nowhere, and just as quickly as it surfaced, the Spanish Flu vanished. Gone for good. Or so we thought. Though mankind has anticipated its resurfacing for some time, mankind is ill prepared. Mutated and with a vengeance, the Spanish Flu returns.
In a world blackened with plague, a glimmer of light exists in the small town of Lodi, Ohio. They shine as a sanctuary because they are ‘flu-free.’ In the wake of the reality that they are spared, the spirit and strength of Lodi is tested. It becomes a fight against what is morally right or wrong in an ncreasingly difficult battle to stay healthy and alive until the flu has run its course.
Review –
Very scary premise because this could completely happen and it would probably be worse that this author tells us. There are graphic descriptions of the bodies at the end of the flu and they are not for the squeamish. There is also a few pages of tear jerker prose and even though it makes a good story the end could have worked out the same without the demise of a main character.
All in all, I enjoyed it very much and read it in one sitting.

At the Mountains of Madness by H.P. Lovecraft

32767Product Description:

Published        June 14th 2005    in paperback

Long acknowledged as a master of nightmarish visions, H. P. Lovecraft established the genuineness and dignity of his own pioneering fiction in 1931 with his quintessential work of supernatural horror, At the Mountains of Madness. The deliberately told and increasingly chilling recollection of an Antarctic expedition’s uncanny discoveries — and their encounter with untold menace in the ruins of a lost civilization — is a milestone of macabre literature.

Review –

This was the first time that I had ever read anything by H.P. Lovecraft and I was really looking forward to it but I was HORRIBLY disappointed.  The author spent more time describing minutia that getting to heart of the story-monsters from long long ago.  I had the audio version and maybe it was the narrator’s voice that i found unpleasant  but I think it was a combination of that and the boring plot that will make me never pick up any H.P. Lovecraft book.

I wish someone would read this and tell me what they think.

Judas Coyne is a collector of the macabre: a cookbook for cannibals . . . a used hangman’s noose . . . a snuff film. An aging death-metal rock god, his taste for the unnatural is as widely known to his legions of fans as the notorious excesses of his youth. I will “sell” my stepfather’s ghost to the highest bidder. . . .

For a thousand dollars, Jude will become the proud owner of a dead man’s suit, said to be haunted by a restless spirit. He isn’t afraid. He has spent a lifetime coping with ghosts—of an abusive father, of the lovers he callously abandoned, of the bandmates he betrayed. What’s one more?

But what UPS delivers to his door in a black heart-shaped box is no imaginary or metaphorical ghost, no benign conversation piece. It’s the real thing.

And suddenly the suit’s previous owner is everywhere: behind the bedroom door . . . seated in Jude’s restored vintage Mustang . . . standing outside his window . . . staring out from his widescreen TV. Waiting—with a gleaming razor blade on a chain dangling from one bony hand. . . .

Review –

Joe Hill can tell a great ghost story that leaves you looking over your shoulder and leaving the light on when you go to bed. I there is a moral to this story, it is be careful what you buy off the internet.  I love it and highly recommend it  if you like the horror genre.

This is a disturbing, terrifying book. You may think you’re brave enough to handle it. But you’re probably not…
Review –
Okay, where to begin?  If you enjoy being scared out of your mind, this is the book for you.  It is a cross between, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Hills Have Eyes and Leatherface.,  It is NOT for the faint of heart. There is much violence and gore.  I loved it.
