Don’t Let Go by Harlan Coben

Suburban New Jersey Detective Napoleon “Nap” Dumas hasn’t been the same since senior year of high school, when his twin brother Leo and Leo’s girlfriend Diana were found dead on the railroad tracks—and Maura, the girl Nap considered the love of his life, broke up with him and disappeared without explanation. For fifteen years, Nap has been searching, both for Maura and for the real reason behind his brother’s death. And now, it looks as though he may finally find what he’s been looking for.

When Maura’s fingerprints turn up in the rental car of a suspected murderer, Nap embarks on a quest for answers that only leads to more questions—about the woman he loved, about the childhood friends he thought he knew, about the abandoned military base near where he grew up, and mostly about Leo and Diana—whose deaths are darker and far more sinister than Nap ever dared imagine.

Review –

I don’t know if Mr. Coben plans to make Napoleon “Nap” Dumas into a series but I sure have my fingers crossed.

He’s a well-adjusted (well, sometimes) police detective whose twin brother, Leo, died when he was 18 years old along with his high school girlfriend, Diana. During most of the book he talks to Leo but by the end has decided that fifteen years is long enough to keep up this practice.

He finds out that members of a “conspiracy club”, of which he was not a member, are being murdered and sets out to find the killer and discover the reason behind the deaths. His brother was a member but Diana, Leo’s girlfriend, was not. Do the current murders have to do with the “club” or to a”secret” missile base not far from town.

Nap discovers many dark  secrets along the way to finding the killer of the club members AND his brother and it is a shocker.

Loved this book and highly recommend it.   Five stars!

Review –

This book will grip you tightly around the throat just after the first sentence and won’t let go until the end.

I knew opening that red door would destroy my life.

There are so many things going on in this book, the disappearance of a seventeen year old girl,  and a man being cast as a pedophile, but is he?  He is one of five Princeton roommates who have had their lives destroyed in the last year. Who is behind it?

What really happened to Haley and is it connected to Dan Mercer?

So many questions, but I’ll never tell. If you want to know, you really need to pick up this stand alone novel by Harlan Coben. You will not be disappointed.

Fantastic!!

Missing You by Harlan Coben

Book Description

March 18, 2014
From#1 New York Times bestselling author Harlan Coben, a heart-pounding thriller about the ties we have to our past…and the lies that bind us together.
It’s a profile, like all the others on the online dating site. But as NYPD Detective Kat Donovan focuses on the accompanying picture, she feels her whole world explode, as emotions she’s ignored for decades come crashing down on her. Staring back at her is her ex-fiancé Jeff, the man who shattered her heart—and who she hasn’t seen in 18 years.

Kat feels a spark, wondering if this might be the moment when past tragedies recede and a new world opens up to her.  But when she reaches out to the man in the profile, her reawakened hope quickly darkens into suspicion and then terror as an unspeakable conspiracy comes to light, in which monsters prey upon the most vulnerable.

As the body count mounts and Kat’s hope for a second chance with Jeff grows more and more elusive, she is consumed by an investigation that challenges her feelings about everyone she ever loved—her former fiancé, her mother, and even her father, whose cruel murder so long ago has never been fully explained. With lives on the line, including her own, Kat must venture deeper into the darkness than she ever has before, and discover if she has the strength to survive what she finds there.

Review –
Fantastic story line on just how uncertain and often dangerous the on-line dating scene can be. I mean, is the profile picture a true likeness of the person or was it photo shopped or stolen from another site and is the bio true or telling just the good points or totally not true at all. So glad I don’t have to worry about this because after reading Mr. Coben’s book I would have deleting my account on any dating site where I was a member.
A fast and great read with  a surprise ending you don’t see coming.  Give it a try.

Review –
This is an excellent follow-up to the first book in the Mickey Bolitar Series and even though it had been awhile since i read it I had no problem picking up the story line when I started this one.  I hate it when a series doesn’t flow with ease and continuity.
This is a great Yound Adult series but could be appreciated by those of any age, in fact, if you’re a fan of Myron Bolitar-this series is for you.

In Six Years, a masterpiece of modern suspense, Harlan Coben explores the depth and passion of lost love…and the secrets and lies at its heart.  Six years have passed since Jake Fisher watched Natalie, the love of his life, marry another man. Six years of hiding a broken heart by throwing himself into his career as a college professor. Six years of keeping his promise to leave Natalie alone, and six years of tortured dreams of her life with her new husband, Todd. But six years haven’t come close to extinguishing his feelings, and when Jake comes across Todd’s obituary, he can’t keep himself away from the funeral. There he gets the glimpse of Todd’s wife he’s hoping for…but she is not Natalie. Whoever the mourning widow is, she’s been married to Todd for almost two decades, and with that fact everything Jake thought he knew about the best time of his life—a time he has never gotten over—is turned completely inside out. As Jake searches for the truth, his picture-perfect memories of Natalie begin to unravel. Mutual friends of the couple either can’t be found, or don’t remember Jake. No one has seen Natalie in years. Jake’s search for the woman who broke his heart, who lied to him, soon puts his very life at risk as it dawns on him that the man he has become may be based on a carefully constructed fiction. Harlan Coben once again delivers a shocking page-turner that deftly explores the power of past love, and the secrets and lies that such love can hide

I thought this was a great mystery, although slow in several places and a bit predictable in others, but all in all a great Summer read.

A Harlan Coben Classic—now back in print!

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Terrible secrets lead basketball star David Baskin to fake his death while honeymooning in the tropics in this manipulative but otherwise engaging first novel. His bereaved bride, supermodel Laura Ayars, not sure that David’s drowning was accidental, starts sleuthing–which proves dangerous when somebody begins killing people who may have the answers she wants. Meanwhile, David, fitted out with a new identity and appearance, tries out for his original team, the Boston Celtics, and “replaces” himself at his former position. Why he has faked his death is explained in the story’s penultimate surprise. But why he risks playing in front of fans who know his style is never addressed. Crucial coincidences abound, such as the love affair of David’s brother and Laura’s sister–adults who, as kids 30 years before, just happen to have witnessed their parents’ worst sins. Coben manufactures tension primarily by keeping key details out of his narrative, a method that eventually wears thin. The resolution comes as a relief, with less of a bang than its buildup promises. First was Harlan Coben’s first novel and I didn’t know it existed until I found the audio version on sale and slid it into my auto cd player.  It is very fast paced with twists at every turn and every author should be so lucky to have such a masterpiece as their first novel.  I highly recommend this book.

Review –

Fantastic, Excellent, Fabulous.  You get the picture.  I loved this book.  The author, Harlan Coben, has done it again.  The way the storyline and the characters intertwined is genius.  It was a fast read and hard to put down.  If you like the Crime Fiction genre you really need to put this on the top of your list of books to read.  Can’t wait for his next one.

Review –
As I understand it, Miracle Cure, is the second book written by the author, Harlan Coben and I hadn’t heard of it until I saw it in audio format and since I’m always on the lookout for audiobooks by my favorite authors, when I saw this one I had to have it.
The story starts out with a murder and a hint of intrigue and deception and I was hooked and it only got better from there.
I love mysteries in the medical genre and this one fit the bill.   It involves doctors, ground-breaking experiments, violence, foreign locales and a main character who is a basketball star.  (sound familiar?)  If you’ve never read anything by Harlan Coben or if you have and missed this one-give it a try.  You will love it!

Review –

I’ve been a fan of Harlan Coben for many years so it was only natural  for me to put his new young adult novel on my “to be read” list and select to read it ahead of several others on the list.

He (the author) did not let me down.  The plot was great, the characters very well developed and I like the way an old familiar character had a small part, that character being Myron Bolitar(who happens to be one of my all time favorites).  It was a very fast read and held my interest to the very end and left me wanting more.   I can’t wait for the next installment.
