Not a Drop to Drink(Not a Drop to Drink #1) by Mindy McGinnis

Book Description

September 24, 2013

Fans of classic frontier survival stories, as well as readers of dystopian literature, will enjoy this futuristic story where water is worth more than gold. New York Times bestselling author Michael Grant says Not a Drop to Drink is a debut “not to be missed.” With evocative, spare language and incredible drama, danger, and romance, Mindy McGinnis depicts one girl’s journey in a frontierlike world not so different from our own.

Teenage Lynn has been taught to defend her pond against every threat: drought, a snowless winter, coyotes, and most important, people looking for a drink. She makes sure anyone who comes near the pond leaves thirsty—or doesn’t leave at all. Confident in her own abilities, Lynn has no use for the world beyond the nearby fields and forest. But when strangers appear, the mysterious footprints by the pond, nighttime threats, and gunshots make it all too clear Lynn has exactly what they want, and they won’t stop until they get it. . . .

Review –

I had been wanting to read this book for a very long time and finally found it for free through Overdrive and the Virtual Library system and loved it.

The characters, story line and actions in the book were all believable and very well written and there was a part that I wasn’t expecting and it broke my heart. (I cry at the drop of a hat) If you are a fan of the dystopian or post-apocalyptic  genre, this is the book for you.

Can’t wait to read the next installment.

The Last Town (Wayward Pines #3) by Blake Crouch

Book Description

July 15, 2014

Welcome to Wayward Pines, the last town.

Secret Service agent Ethan Burke arrived in Wayward Pines, Idaho, three weeks ago. In this town, people are told who to marry, where to live, where to work. Their children are taught that David Pilcher, the town’s creator, is god. No one is allowed to leave; even asking questions can get you killed.

But Ethan has discovered the astonishing secret of what lies beyond the electrified fence that surrounds Wayward Pines and protects it from the terrifying world beyond. It is a secret that has the entire population completely under the control of a madman and his army of followers, a secret that is about to come storming through the fence to wipe out this last, fragile remnant of humanity.

Blake Crouch’s electrifying conclusion to the Wayward Pines Series—now a Major Television Event Series debuting Winter 2015 on FOX—will have you glued to the page right down to the very last word.

This is one of my favorite series and with this being the last in the trilogy, the author did not disappoint.

The “abbies” have been defeated and now the people left in town try to put their lives back together. They find out that the food stores are running dangerously low and Winter is coming when fresh food is non existent and so they have to make a decision.  Do they stay for as long as the food will last or do they try to move somewhere warmer, which would be very hard because of having to travel through “abbie” territory so they decide to do something that is the  last thing any one them would have ever thought they would do. They decide to go back into suspended animation for a length of time for the “abbies” to evolve into something that the humans could live with. I won’t tell you how long they stay in suspension but my mouth dropped opened when I heard the last few words of the audio book version.  I couldn’t believe it!   I wish the author would write another series taking up where this one leaves off.

Arnco by Ben Muse

Product Description:

Published: March 29, 2014

Jake Brigham, a wildly successful first time author is drowning in the undertow of his newfound success. After years of “winning,” he realizes he has only lost–a beloved mother, a marriage, even his ability to create. Eventually, he leaves the demands of New York and returns to a place once close to his heart: Arnco, a dying Georgia mill village. He rebuilds his life, and his passion returns, for words, and for a childhood friend.

Allie Tanner, a widowed, single mother, has been fighting demons since the day she was born. Her entire life has been a struggle– with an alcoholic father, her own health problems, the death of her husband, and the constant worry that she may never be able to protect the one thing that means the most: her daughter Grace.
Jake ignites the spark of hope within her, and she within him. And each for very different reasons. When circumstances from their past collide with their present, will their hopes survive? Will tragedy cause a horrific breakdown or an inspirational destiny?

Review –

This was a wonderful book and would make a perfect movie on the Lifetime Movies Network or the “Women’s Channel” as my husband calls it. The story held my interest for the first few pages and the more I read the harder I found I couldn’t put it down.

There is a saying that “you can never go home again” but that’s just what Jake Brigham does and he finds a childhood friend, Allie Tanner, whose life has been anything but a bed of roses and together they bring to each other what is needed and I won’t tell you the ending but it’s good.

In the story there are family dynamics, childhood friends, marriage, divorce, love found, love lost romance, humor and tears.

The long awaited second book in the 1929 Jonathan’s Cross trilogy. It’s June, 1930 and life is harder than ever. Everyone searches for ways to cope and continue on with life, except his pregnant widow, Claire, who is devastated. As the gears of life slowly start to move again, new friends are made and old enemies return to finish what they started. At Maura’s inarguable insistence, Claire meets Gordon, a widower, and they begin to forge a bond through a common sorrow. As Claire begins to move on and accept her new life, Aryl returns. While a happy reunion at first, all is not as it seems with Aryl. As his self destruction becomes obvious to everyone, Jonathan and Caleb must do what they can to save their friend.

Fantastic follow-up to the first book and I found it very hard to put down.  I love the description of the sea and the lives of the fishermen who rely om its bounty.  Really looking forward to the next installment.
