Retired military Colonel Caleb Edgington has spent two long years trying to achieve the most important mission objective of his life—but not behind enemy lines. He’s trying to capture a woman with a broken heart. Having lost at love once, he understands being gun shy. The residual fears from Carlotta Buckley’s nasty divorce have stood between them, but he’s done with that. And he’s got the perfect strategy to lure her in…

Carlotta never thought she’d fall in love again. Once bitten, she’s now more than twice shy. And Caleb is everything she can’t handle—fierce, relentless, uncompromising…sexual. She’s managed to mostly avoid him, but now his son and her daughter need their help. Can Caleb and the spirit of the season convince her that she’s ready to take a chance on love again?

Review –

I came across this book while browsing OverDrive and choose it because of the short synopsis even though it was #6.5 in the series.

This is the first contemporary romance I have read or listened to that involved an older man and woman (in their early 50’s) and I found it totally refreshing and hot and steamy at the same time. Why more books aren’t written about this age group, or even older, I don’t know, but I would assume that the demographic  for contemporary/erotic romances are much younger. Maybe I’m in a minority, but  I don’t think so. Adult women of ANY age enjoy this type of book.

Anyway-back to the book.  Caleb is a retired military man and a dominant, who hasn’t had a submission woman for many many years. He has had an interest in Carlotta, the mother-in-law of one of his sons for a couple of years. Carlotta is divorced  and her ex-husband was a complete a**hole and treated her like dirt and made her feel worthless. She doesn’t want another relationship with a controlling man.

A situation comes up where Caleb needs the help of Carlotta so he makes his move and the description of the scene was spot on erotic.  They are interrupted before the sex act itself is done but they do eventually  manage to  come together, so to speak, and again the author does a fantastic job with the dialogue and description. It certainly doesn’t hurt that Caleb is a dominant at heart and talks “dirty” like nobody’s business.

The book also brings together characters from former books and made me want to read or listen to as many as I can find.

If this one is any indication as to the “sexiness” of the others, I can’t wait. (pant pant)

If I Run (If I Run #1) by Terri Blackstock

Book Description:

Format: Audio/Audible

Casey knows the truth.

But it won’t set her free.

Casey Cox’s DNA is all over the crime scene. There’s no use talking to police; they have failed her abysmally before. She has to flee before she’s arrested . . . or worse. The truth doesn’t matter anymore.

But what is the truth? That’s the question haunting Dylan Roberts, the war-weary veteran hired to find Casey. PTSD has marked him damaged goods, but bringing Casey back can redeem him. Though the crime scene seems to tell the whole story, details of the murder aren’t adding up. Casey Cox doesn’t fit the profile of a killer. But are Dylan’s skewed perceptions keeping him from being objective? If she isn’t guilty, why did she run?

Unraveling her past and the evidence that condemns her will take more time than he has, but as Dylan’s damaged soul intersects with hers, he is faced with two choices. The girl who occupies his every thought is a psychopathic killer . . . or a selfless hero. And the truth could be the most deadly weapon yet.

Review –

After finding best friend Brent Pace stabbed to death in his apartment, Casey Cox knows she will be the prime suspect and needs to make a decision quickly. Armed with thousands in cash that her father gave her for emergencies, she hops on a bus out of Shreveport, Louisiana, and becomes Grace Newland after purchasing the identity illegally.

Back in Shreveport, war-weary vet Dylan Roberts attends Brent’s funeral and is hired by a family friend in the police department to bring Casey home for questioning. As Dylan tries to determine Casey’s motive for murdering her friend, “Grace” is trying to establish a new life in Shady Grove, Georgia, thanks to Miss Lucy, an elderly woman she met on the bus. Sleuthing online from afar, Casey uncovers evidence that Brent had information pertaining to her father’s murder. Unsure who to trust as evidence begins to point to corrupt detectives, Casey digs into her family past to figure out what really happened to her father a decade before.

Dylan, just a few steps behind Casey, is skeptical of her involvement in Brent’s death. Will her questioning end up costing Casey her life, or will Dylan track her down in time to save them both? The author  is masterly in navigating the suspenseful fugitive plot, using the alternation of Casey’s and Dylan’s chapters to ratchet up the tension. Crisp dialogue and unexpected twists make this compulsive reading, and a final chapter cliffhanger leaves things poised for a sequel.

I really enjoyed this story but the cliffhanger was a surprise because I didn’t know about the sequel. I plan on reading or listening to it as soon as I can find it.

Crazy Beautiful by Lucia Jordan

Format: Free Digital Book

Valeri Huntington has her dream—a publicist for one of the top firms on the east coast. Nevertheless, she can’t help but feel like something is missing. A long list of men has been left in her wake because they just can’t seem to measure up or she finds a way to rationalize her way out of anything before it gets too serious. The one relationship she did have ended roughly and left her picking up the pieces up of her heart for months. After that breakup, she vowed to throw herself into her work and that’s where she’s been ever since. The night she ran into Dallas McCormick she was left feeling like she’d been hit with a ton of bricks. The reclusive man that lived in the mountains was somewhat of a legend. He’d outright insulted her and pissed her off like no one ever has, and yet, her body burned from a desire that she had no idea even existed.

Like a magnet, she was pulled to him and she had no idea why. Dallas McCormick was not the man everyone created rumors about. However, there is no denying that there is a dark shadow that looms over him, and it’s one that could very well put Valerie in harm’s way.

Review –

This is the first book in the Crazy Beautiful series and although it was good, I don’t plan to read the others. There was a bit of chemistry between Valeri and Dallas but it wasn’t the combustible type and it’s too predictable. Dallas is ex-military and suffers from PTSD and that’s what puts Valeri in harm’s way at the end of the book. The reader knows that everything is going to work out fine in the end so why spend money just to confirm that?

It was a short pleasant read. Great cover though!

Road to Nowhere (Road to Nowhere #1) by M. Robinson

Book Description:

Published: December 6, 2016

Format: E-Book

I once read that every warrior hoped an honorable death would find him. I always went looking for mine, but not even the Reaper wanted me.
I was trained to kill. I was trained to not ask why. To take orders and just march in line. Hooah motherfucker.
Life or death.
Ride or die.
And I’m not only talking about the military. I’m talking about the life that led me on the road to nowhere.
My life.
I fought for my brothers.
I fought for my family.
I fought for my country.
And I fought for her…

Never realizing I might die for them too.

Review –

This book had me feeling several emotions, anxiety, sadness, wariness, and kept me turning pages to the very end.

Creed is a member of a MC club and meets Mia, the kid sister of his best friend. He’s 19 and she’s 9 and she loves him from the minute they meet and over the years she wants him to see her as a “woman” and not a little girl. Creed becomes Vice President of the MC club and the girl he likes, Autumn is killed in the 9/11 bombing and because of that he enlists for four years. Mia grows up but still is too young but she tries to convince Creed whenever he is home on leave. Finally he knows he has to break her heart in order to get her to stay away from  him, for her sake.

Mia is not quite 16 when she goes to MC club party with a girlfriend of hers and meets “Rebel” and she gives him her virginity all the while wished it were Creed. Her first and one time to have sex and she gets pregnant and goes to tell Rebel and finds out he is Creed’s younger brother. Creed finds out and all hell breaks loose.

Everything in this book, it’s just so damn good. The overprotectiveness that Mia had to go through. Her father, a Good Ol’ Boy, not allowing her to truly grow up. The choices she made because of that – I truly felt her frustration, anger and her passion to live. I love how everyone is somehow intertwined in this book. Creed is friends with Mason who is the son another Good Ol’ Boy. It just makes the entire story even more interesting.
The ending. (I won’t say what happens but it’s bad) Holy shit. Seriously?!!? Killing me here! I know it’s with good intentions. But damn, I am dying here. I am seriously sucked into this whole story and I need the rest so badly. The second book in the series comes out later this year and I can’t wait.

Review –

Discovered a great new series – CSA Case Files by Kennedy Layne . I loved the book and look forward to reading others in the series.

Crest Security Agency (CSA) is run by Gavin Crest, a retired Marine Master Sergeant.  He has personally selected his own former military team members, both men and women, to configure a seamless Special Operations Capable (SOC) unit.  Working together on investigations, domestically and abroad, each team member will find their niche in life and love.  Follow along with the author as she conveys each of their stories as they work together on investigations that lead them down perilous paths of passion, intrigue and suspense.
