Restore Me (Shatter Me #4) by Tahereh Mafi

Juliette Ferrars thought she’d won. She took over Sector 45, was named the new Supreme Commander, and now has Warner by her side. But she’s still the girl with the ability to kill with a single touch—and now she’s got the whole world in the palm of her hand. When tragedy hits, who will she become? Will she be able to control the power she wields and use it for good?

Review –

The book picks off immediately off the last novel, and though the first seventy-five percent of the novel moves at a slow, turtle crawl, I actually understood the importance of the slow pace. Through the first seventy-five percent of the novel, Juliette scrambles around helplessly in confusion, adjusting to her new authority and workload. It would be awfully weird if Juliette seamlessly transitioned to an insane girl from the asylum that somehow managed to destroy the Supreme Commander of North America to a serious, responsible leader. She is so incredibly new to this crazy, tangled world that’s overflowing with treachery, politics, and issues. Being Supreme Commander is more than just fighting against rebellious forces constantly. It involves the intriguing, dark relationships between the most powerful leaders around the world. You can’t just waltz into one of the world’s most powerful positions and expect everything to be blood and glory. Instead, it’s a slow, sweet burn of painful deception and lies—-a wicked game played between the world’s most significant leaders.

Another thing that I particularly enjoyed about this novel was the reality check. In the first three books, Warner and Juliette have undeniable chemistry and quickly become infatuated with each other, but once that infatuation burns out, it’s time for the two sides of the relationship to truly understand each other. Finally, we get to see a more realistic side of Warner and Juliette’s relationship. They realize that besides the events that occurred in the pats month, they really don’t know much about each other. At times, it was indescribably painful to witness their conflicts, but at the same time, I relished them. After all the lustrous flirtations between the two of them in the past few novels, it was nice to see the other side of things. Love isn’t always going to be a smooth ride of infatuation and flirtations; you’re going to have to make an effort to know who this person is and what they stand for.

Finally, I loved the plot twist at the end. Even though I almost guessed it in the first few pages, the anticipation is slowly but steadily built up until the climax where everything comes crashing down. I LOVED it. Honestly, the cliffhanger puts all other cliffhangers to shame. I don’t want to say much, but reading the ending was probably one of those moments where everything that happened in the novel earlier is tied together beautifully into one giant package of astonishment.

Overall, this novel was fantastic, and I’m excited to see what the next two novels have in store for Juliette!

This series has mesmerizing covers and I love them all.

Owned is a dark erotic romance. Please pay close attention to the use of the words dark, erotic, and romance. It has intense sexual situations, a Master/slave relationship, mild abuse, and some violence. Reader discretion is advised.

Review –

I read the Kindle version of this book in 2015 and I found it on Audible in their Romance Package so I decided to read (listen) to it a second time.

What I really liked about this book compared to a lot of BDSM focused books is that Ellie’s had a thing for Kayne for awhile. You usually see it where the heroine is a little more reluctant to get into a relationship with the enigmatic businessman, but I felt Ellie was a little more of the kind of person  who knows what she likes, even if she’s a little too afraid to go get it at first. There’s reasons, and they make sense, but I just liked that she liked him!

And Kayne… he’s got more than enough secrets for the both of them. He’s holding back in a way, too. While Ellie is keeping a safe distance from Kayne for business reasons, he’s keeping his secrets for his own personal reasons. The contrast was a really interesting mix that I enjoyed. There’s a lot of reasons for them to not be together, but I still wanted them to come together.

And, oh boy, when they threw caution to the wind and went for it, it was smoldering! The sex scenes are intense. I loved the Master/slave aspect, too. It’s not something you really see in a lot of books, at least not to this level. I liked that this kind of shed light on a different side to BDSM than the usual, and while some parts left me feeling a little worried, I enjoyed reading it a lot.

As long as you know what you’re getting into, this is a great book. It’s got those mysteries and forbidden attractions that I can’t seem to get enough of, the steaming hot sex scenes that I want in almost all of my books, and watching the story and relationship unfold between Ellie and Kayne was really exciting. They’re a cute couple, despite being more than a little kinky, ha,I loved them!

Listening to the book was sooo much hotter than reading it. The narrators, Muffy Newtown and San Crowley, do a fantastic job and make it blistering hot!!!!

Please heed the above warning because there could be many triggers in this book/series.

New York City, 2118. Manhattan is home to a thousand-story supertower, a breathtaking marvel that touches the sky. But amid high-tech luxury and futuristic glamour, five teenagers are keeping dangerous secrets…

Leda is haunted by memories of what happened on the worst night of her life. She’ll do anything to make sure the truth stays hidden—even if it means trusting her enemy.

Watt just wants to put everything behind him…until Leda forces him to start hacking again. Will he do what it takes to be free of her for good?

And then there’s Calliope, the mysterious, bohemian beauty who arrives in New York determined to cause a stir. And she knows exactly where to begin.

But unbeknownst to them all, someone is watching their every move, someone with revenge in mind. After all, in a world of such dazzling heights, just one wrong step can mean a devastating fall.

Review –

I love it when an author begins a sequel right where the preceding book leaves off and Katharine McGee did not disappoint.

Just like its predecessor, The Dazzling Heights is a character-driven story. The character developments are definitely something I really look forward to. I want to see how the characters moved on and if they learned anything from the incident. Avery was a character I liked in the first book. However, I’m not sure if I liked Avery in The Dazzling Heights. All her storyline focused on her relationship with Atlas. I was actually expecting more for Avery’s character development. I have to say though that Avery became more exciting toward the end of the book. Finally, some drama from Avery.

Leda is the character I strongly disliked  the most at the end of the first book. At the beginning of this book, my feelings didn’t change. I still hated her. She was truly sly and cunning in order to get what she wanted. Although I have to say that I wasn’t expecting the development with Leda. While she didn’t become a completely different person, there was a lot of changes in her. I think having Watt by her side helped her a lot in realising what she did wrong in the first book.

Watt is still the same Watt in The Thousandth Floor. In this book you’d meet him a lot because he spent a lot of time with Leda – which leads to him developing feelings for her. I have to say that this new romantic development was totally fine. The transitions from “enemy” to romantic interest was done really well.

Rylin was my favourite girl in the first book. The scholarship was something I didn’t expect to happen. To have her in the same school with the others had drama written all over it. One of the biggest question I had for her was how was her relationship Cord going to be? Are they going to be friends again? Did Cord hate her? I really want them to be together. Aaaand I wasn’t disappointed! I liked how their relationship was played out in this book. I knew it would be impossible for them to get back together right away given the ending of the first book. I really liked Cord as a character I wish we got his POV in the next book.

One of the things I wished for this book was more Marielle. I was hoping that Marielle would play a bigger role in this book, but no! We got a new character instead. For me, Calliope was a very welcome addition to the story. She brought new dramas and excitement to the story. Although I have to say that with her being in love with Atlas, there were SO MANY mentions of Atlas which made me wish there was an Atlas POV.  Beyond Atlas, her backstory was very sad and helped you to understand where she was coming from. I wasn’t sure how to feel about her in the middle of the book, but at the end, I liked Calliope. Despite her con-artist activities there were many instances in the book where you got to see the real Calliope. I’m really excited on how she’s going to be in the next book.

Love this YA series!

Unbeloved (Undeniable #4) by Madeline Sheehan

Book Description:

Published: June 23, 2014

Format: Audio/Audible

Dorothy Kelley is a born romantic, searching for her prince. Instead she finds herself pregnant at fifteen, and in a loveless marriage by the tender age of eighteen.

Then hope comes riding into her life on a motorcycle and within weeks, Jason “Jase” Brady, a member of the Hell’s Horsemen Motorcycle Club, sweeps Dorothy off her feet.

But nothing is ever simple for Dorothy. Jase is married with children. And as Dorothy patiently waits for Jase to give her the happily-ever-after she’s been dreaming about, James “Hawk” Young, a member of the Hell’s Horsemen with secrets of his own, sees an opening into Dorothy’s life and takes it.

Carrying on two secret affairs is no easy feat. As Dorothy tries to dig herself out of the mess she’s created, covering one mistake with another, tragedy strikes, nearly costing Dorothy her life and that of her unborn son.

What follows is a long and painful journey of self-discovery and forgiveness, as Dorothy comes to realize that home was exactly where she’d left it, and the love she’d forever craved had always been within her reach.

This is the story of Dorothy, Jase, and Hawk.

We are all born pure; it is our journey that burdens us and leads us astray. Our mistakes that beat us down and cover us in guilt and shame, burying us a little more with each passing hardship. It is up to us to dig ourselves out, to come to terms with our faults, to embrace not only our imperfections but those of the ones we love, and to once again find the path we strayed from.

Warning: This is not a conventional or predictable love story. It involves one woman and two men bound by a love so destructive it spans two decades, pitting brother against brother, and shattering the lives of those touched by it.

Review –

This book is such an emotional ride about so many broken individuals that it left me feeling a bit sad about the hardships they faced, the things they missed, the bumps they hit.  No, some things may not seem fair.  Love isn’t easy for them.  But true love stayed true ’til the end.  Through the good and the bad.  Dorothy’s story is not the same as the others in the series.  And I was perfectly ok with that.

As much as I cared for Dorothy before, I truly came to understand her and feel for her in this book.  Her life, her emotions, her wants and needs.  What a life she’s had!  Then there’s Jace who might’ve broken my heart too.  And lastly there’s Hawk.  Who stole my heart!

Another job very well done for Madeline Sheehan who manages to suck me into her world with every installment in new ways.  And what about the CLIFFHANGER ending!!!!!!!!    OMG! No spoilers, but I can’t find the next book FREE so I’ll have to wait awhile, but no matter how long it takes I will not forget any of the characters that I have met in this series.

Domination (Submission #2) by CD Reiss

Book Description

Published: November 2017

Format: Audio/Audible

I want to just clarify a couple of things.
Submission is not abdication. Submission is not resignation. It’s not weak or fragile. It doesn’t mean I break at the first sign of trouble.
Well, I broke for a few weeks. When I realized I was falling in love with Jonathan and that I’d never be the same if I allowed it to continue, I broke into a million sharp little pieces. I think I damaged him in the process.
But what could I do?
Stay with him and untangle the mess of his life? Commit to his rules, his secrets, his troubles?
No. Just, no.
If we’re doing this, we’re doing it. If I’m committing, it’s to a man, not a lie. I’ll strip away everything between us, even if it ends us.

Review –

In this book we learn more about Jonathan’s past and drama.. his ex-wife constantly wanting to ruin him and get his money.. his crazy family and secrets. Monica still fighting to get a place on the music industry.. she wants to be herself not to be attached to any men last name and power. She wants to show that she is strong and doesn’t need any money or a man to hold her back.. even thou she keeps failing to achieve that when it comes to Jonathan. There’s a lot of twists and turns in Domination, people keeps trying to break them apart. lies, secrets and a past that keeps trying to come between them. The love between Jonathan and Monica is so surreal and very strong and in this book their relationship evolves even more, it get deeper and closer.. their feelings are more palpable, their love overflows the pages of the book.. is like you get to feel how strong their feelings are for each other, is just breathtaking to read about these two.

The sex between  Jonathan and Monica is darker and fiercer  and very very explicit. Jonathan is a sexual sadist and poor Monica takes anything he can dish out. I feel she is too submissive  in these cases.

This installment of the Submission series ends in a surprising cliffhanger that I didn’t see coming. Can’t wait to start the third and last book in the series, Connection, but first I have another book to read from Overdrive.

Soulless (King #4) by T.M. Frazier

Book Description:

Published: February 23, 2016

Format: Audio/Audible

Soulless, is part two of Lawless.

The finale to Bear and Thia’s epic love story.

Review –

Do not read this as a stand alone. You simply must first read them in order: King ,Tyrant and Lawless.  Call it sage advice.  Call it a moral imperative.  Call it because-I’ve-read-them-so-I-know-what-I’m-talking-about-trust-me-on-this-one-eh?  Call it what you want but please do not attempt to start this series at Soulless.  There is a reveal so utterly game changing that you probably really, really want to know why your mind is blown away so righteously.  Me- I can barely see through the chunks of grey matter siding down my forehead and between my eyes for what it’s worth.

Lawless, left us dangling for our lives at a cliffhanger that was equal parts beautiful and sad.  I hate cliffies, but Lawless was Bear’s story and there was no way I was passing that up so there I was dangling away until Soulless dropped into my lap.  The King series builds book upon book.  To care about Soulless, you first have to understand King.  The dark story of a man lost on his own dark path and the young woman he saves along the way.  He has two friends, Bear and Preppy and together they have a brotherhood forged in blood and loyalty.  King walks his path with Doe and they both make it out alive. Bear is just starting his own tumultuous journey and when a series of events tear him away from his MC and reunite him with young, troubled Thia, both of their lives hang in the balance.

Soulless is the culmination of carefully planted seeds and plot twists that make me mighty proud of author TM Frazier.  My chief complaint regarding the first three books has been that there is so much good, gritty, dark substance that I revel in, but then, there is always a departure where the envelope is pushed too far and I am jarred out of my sweet reading spot because something completely odd or non sequitur occurred.

It happened in every book and I shook my fists to the heavens each time.  It was akin to drawing a weird, awkward line through a masterpiece.  Never enough to turn me completely off- but enough that it absolutely bears mentioning.  Nevertheless, King was powerful stuff and the break out star Preppy captured my heart in every way, even though he is the most foul mouthed hottie I have ever run across.  The quiet force in the King series is Bear.  Bear is the son of the most awful MC President you could fathom. In fact, imagine the most depraved club president you can, then imagine him ten times more brutal and conscious-less, and only then can you begin to scratch the surface that is Chop. Walking away from the MC is by blood or casket in this world, so Soulless begins and ends with the conflict between Bear and his evil incarnate father, Chop.

Thia is Bear’s heart beat.  Drawn to her years before and reunited when she needed him most, their connection is tangible and wild.  He knows little about love, but knows he wants to care for and protect Thia.  The daughter of a deranged mother and murdered family, Thia is also searching for a home- a place where she is loved and safe.  Bear’s in every way, their bond is rock solid and the catalyst to THE BIG REVEAL.  They fight for, along side and on the behalf of the other- equals in their own way.  Thia was no whimpering willy, and she was not ridiculously courageous either.  She was just your average broken woman, trying to keep all the pieces together.  I seldom disagreed with her actions and I enjoyed her point of view.  Bear’s point  of view was so full of emotion and longing that I wanted to beat his father bloody for everything he did to ruin Bear.

It is a miracle that Bear survived his old man and was remotely salvageable as a man.  It is astonishing that these two people with royally messed up backgrounds survived at all.  Good thing they did, because their sexual chemistry is off the charts.

The best parts of Soulless lends itself to epic spoilers that I don’t dare ruin for readers.  There is a new female character that I am convinced will be prominent in the next book.  I’d like her to be a surprise, but she is a savage and the hint of her background that we do receive begs for more page time in the future!  Books 1-3 are all fast reads, so the journey to Soulless will pack a punch – but will be quick and worthwhile.  As expected, T.M Frazier did not break her pattern of “wait – what?” scenes and I spent about twenty-five pages more perturbed than I have ever been in my life.  But then I arrived at 99%- the epilogue… and all was forgiven. The who, what, where, and how- meaningless.

Spoiling an ounce of Soulless would be such a disservice, the best I am willing to do is give you a warning.  This is a violent series and both primary couple’s road to their HEA’s are paved in blood and bones.  It is dark, but deliciously so.  You will laugh, cry, cringe and have your mind blown, so if you are game, give it a chance.  If you are looking for well dressed, polite young men courting their crushes with sweet tea and cupcakes, this is not the series for you.  The only character in this series who dressed well at all wore a bow tie, pressed shirt and slacks- and was perhaps the most visceral dangerous of them all.

Thank you TM Frazier for another mind-blowing experience.  Five stars!!!!!!!!

Defiant Queen (Mount Trilogy #2) by Meghan March

Book Description:

Published: November 14, 2017

Format: E-Book/OverDrive

I’m his entertainment. His toy. Payment on a debt.
I tell myself I hate him, but every time he walks into the room, my body betrays me. How can I want him and fear him in the same moment?
They told me he’d mess with my head. Make it go to war with my body.
But I didn’t realize it would be complete anarchy.
I should’ve known better. When Mount’s involved, there are no rules.
I will not surrender. I will not show weakness. I’ll stand my ground and make it out of this bargain with my heart and soul intact.
But he has other plans . . .

Review –

Mount, as we learned in the first book, is a ruthless criminal, but as this story unfolds we find out so much more about this man.  He’s had a shitty childhood, lived in foster homes where he’s had to protect others, as well as defend himself.  He’s learned early on how to survive in a city that has the ability to swallow you whole.

We see Mount start to soften when it comes to Kiera, his queen.  Which isn’t necessarily a good thing in his world.   He has a reputation to uphold, he needs folks to continue to fear him.  So what is it with this mouthy woman and her attitude that has him buckling to his knees?

Kiera keeps coming to Lachlan willingly.  There’s something about this man she can’t seem to say no to.  Not only is she drawn to him sexually, she’s starting to really like him.  Mount urges her to continue to be the be the best she can possibly be at running her whiskey distillery.  He really adores her and treats her well even though he commands her submission in the bedroom, and holy hell she has no problem at all with his orders when it comes to the sexy times.  But, once they calm down after all the mind-blowing, star seeing big fat orgasms, she’s back to her mouthy, defiant self.

I love The Mount series.  Lachlan is a hero you so badly want to hate,  but you just can’t help fall in love with this filthy talking, controlling asshole.  And don’t we all love a heroine who knows how to bring such man to his knees???

Now on to the end of the series, Sinful Empire.

He’s a mystery. An enigma.

His very identity is a secret buried beneath layers of deception.

He’s also an addiction I can’t shake. An attraction I can’t fight.

And then I found out exactly who he is—a man more dangerous than the devil himself.

Now I need him in order to save everything that matters to me.

I have to pull back. Protect myself from the danger that haunts his every step.

Which would be easy . . . if I could stop myself from falling in love with him.

Review –

This book starts where Savage Prince left off. Kane admits that he took out the hit on Temperance’s brother for thirty days so that no one else would.

Her brother has double-crossed the wrong people for a good reason or a bad reason, no one knows, because he can’t be found.

Mount (a criminal kingpin who has his own series) has instructed Kane to protect Temperance so the bad guys can’t get to her.

There is MUCH less sex in this installment of the Savage series but it is still over the top steamy!

At the end Kane has driven Temperance, dressed as Mount’s wife, to a private airport, to meet her brother (I guess someone located him along the way) dressed as Mount and after boarding a plane, they will both go into hiding.

BUT, they never get on the plane, because when Kane sees her brother coming toward them, he shoots him dead. END.

OMG!!!!!

Can’t wait to listen to the last installment but I am putting it off for a while because I don’t want the experience to end. Some of you will understand this while others won’t, and that okay.

Fairy tales come true…

Brie Bennett’s Master is about to make all of her dreams come true. The wedding is almost here but darkness lies ahead—a plot so horrendous it will rock their foundation to the core.

Yet love as fierce and passionate as theirs cannot be denied. Join our favorite submissive as she discovers the romance that awaits when an Italian Dom plans the wedding of the century for his cherished bride.

Review –

I also read numbers seven and eight of this series and enjoyed them, but this one has been my least favorite of the series so far.

There was just too much “lovey dovey” and everything coming up roses because of the fairy-tale-like wedding and honeymoon, until the  end and then we were back to fictional reality.

The next book, Enchant Me, is about the honeymoon and getting Brie pregnant (which does happen) and ends with  a great cliffhanger.

The next two books deal with Master Brad Anderson and Tono and we learn some of their background  and their quests to find their soulmates.

I’m just about to finish up  A Cowboy’s Heart, which deals with Sir Brad Anderson and will report on it shortly.
