Her Last Breath (Kate Burkholder #5) by Linda Castillo

Book Description:

Format: Audio/OverDrive

A rainy night, an Amish father returning home with his three children, a speeding car hurtling toward them out of nowhere.

What at first seems like a tragic, but routine car accident suddenly takes on a more sinister cast as evidence emerges that nothing about the crash is accidental. But who would want to kill an Amish deacon and two of his children? He leaves behind a grieving widow and a young boy who clings to life in the intensive care wing of a hospital, unable to communicate. He may be the only one who knows what happened that night. Desperate to find out who killed her best friend’s husband and why, Kate begins to suspect she is not looking for a reckless drunk, but instead is on the trail of a cold blooded killer amid the residents of Painter’s Mill. It is a search that takes her on a chilling journey into the darkest reaches of the human heart and makes her question everything she has ever believed about the Amish culture into which she was born.

Review –

The story opens with a horrible accident. An Amish father and his children, returning home in their horse-drawn buggy, are demolished by a speeding car that flees into the night. A scene that is so harrowingly rendered it’s as if the reader is an eyewitness.

But was it an accident? Or was it a murder of horrific proportions? If so, why? What’s the payoff for killing off a father and his children?  Nothing is apparent and as Kate digs deeper into the family and the community, a community that still resents her departure from the fold, she uncovers dark deeds and motives that defy understanding. She was best friends, as children, with the wife of the murdered family, but did she really know her at all?

Kate’s continuing and growing relationship with FBI agent John Tomasetti only complicates her life (John has bought a farmhouse about 20 minutes from Painter’s Mill and has asked Kate to move in with him) and skews her choices. Choices that could end her career. John’s too.

Excellent story.

Sworn to Silence (Kate Burkholder #1) by Linda Castillo

Book Description:

Published: June 23, 2009

Format: Audio/OverDrive

When a serial killer strikes bucolic Painters Mill, Ohio, the killer’s signature -—Roman numerals ritualistically carved into each victim’s abdomen- —matches the MO of four unsolved murders from 16 years earlier. Police chief Kate Burkholder, who’s reluctant to dredge up the past, must keep secret that she knows why the old murders stopped. Not satisfied with the case’s progress, local politicos set up a multijurisdictional task force to assist, including a law-enforcement agent battling his own demons. The added scrutiny and the rising body count threaten to push the chief over the edge. Adept at creating characters with depth and nuance, Castillo smoothly integrates their backstories into a well-paced plot that illuminates the divide between the Amish and English worlds.

Review –

Since I enjoyed number eight, Among the Wicked, in this series – I decided to go back and start from the beginning and I’m so glad I did.

In this first book in the series we learn more background on Kate’s reason for leaving the Amish life and her estrangement from her siblings. We also meet her love interest-to-be, John Tomasetti for the first time and learn more of his back story. Both were tormented with a serious past yet they were drawn together during the hunt for the serial killer.

We also learn the lengths to which people will go to cover up ugly things in their lives and the affect in has on all around them.

I enjoyed this book more than number eight so I will continue with the series.

A great read.

Driven (Driven #1) by K. Bromberg

Book Description:

Published: January 30, 2014

Rylee Thomas is used to being in control. But she’s about to meet the one man that just might make her enjoy losing it…

I am the exception to the rule.

In a world full of willing women, I’m a challenge to the roguish and achingly handsome Colton Donavan. A man used to getting exactly what he wants in all aspects of life. He’s the reckless bad boy constantly skating that razor thin edge toward out of control, on and off of the track.

Colton crashes into my life like a tornado: sapping my control, testing my vulnerabilities beyond their limits, and unintentionally penetrating the protective wall around my healing heart. Tearing apart the world I rebuilt so carefully with structure, predictability, and discipline.

I can’t give him what he wants and he can’t give me what I need. But after a glimpse beneath his refined exterior into the dark secrets of his damaged soul, can I bring myself to walk away?

Our sexual chemistry is undeniable. Our individual need for complete control is irrefutable. But when our worlds collide, is the chemistry enough to bring us together or will our untold secrets and battle of wills force us apart?

Review –

I would have rated this book five stars except for the fact that I felt like strangling Rylee Thomas most of the time.

She seems like a smart woman, although a bit naive, but when it came to Colton Donavan, she was a whiny girl who says NO one minute and turns around and says YES to the same question or advances. She knows he only wants to use her for sex and will not give her the HEA she wants or even the love she wants, but does this stop her  from letting him f*ck her any time he wants. NO!  I wanted to scream!!!!!  In her mind she says all the right things but doesn’t act on them.

Colton is damaged goods, he says so  himself. He is rich, handsome beyond description and good in bed so he knows he cans get any woman any time but now he has his eye on Rylee and will not give her up until he does. He has a Dr. Jekyll/Mr/ Hyde personality and she finally sees it at the end, but I know she’ll  go crawling back to him in the next book .

The sexual chemistry between Colton and Rylee made my Kindle smoke and the sex scenes made it almost too hot to handle but I will continue with this series when I can find the other books and I just pray that Rylee isn’t so pathetic as she was in this one.

Tamed (Club Sin #5) by Stacey Kennedy

Book Description:

Published: March 10, 2015

Porter Marshall has nearly achieved his goal of becoming a Club Sin Master, but his new sub poses a much bigger challenge than he anticipated. Despite their mutual attraction and red-hot dungeon sessions, Kenzie Hart plays her own games. Her bratty, you-can’t-break-me attitude masks terrible personal hurt—pain that only the exquisite touch of a skilled Dom can release. But when Porter suggests taking their connection to the outside world, Kenzie denies him . . . which only makes him want her more.

Kenzie can’t ignore the raw, fierce bond she has with Porter. But she can’t give in to his dangerous demands, either. Is the passion they share real, or is he using her to solidify his status at Club Sin? And yet, who else can she trust with the shattering secrets she holds within? As Porter expertly brings her to the point of no return, Kenzie surrenders her body—and, piece by piece, her heart.

Five-star-feedback-on-oDesk

Well, I’ve done it again-read out of sequence.  I really had no choice because I have found this series on OverDrive and it’s like checking a book out of a library, sometimes someone else has checked out the book you want. I read Claimed, #1 and then #5 was available so I grabbed it.

In this installment of the Club Sin series, we find Kenzie, a sub with a boat load of baggage which causes her to act out with the Doms and Masters at Club Sin and many of them refuse to ever play with her again and Porter a Dom who has a month to “tame” her and make the rank as a Master.

He knows her bratty reputation as a smart mouthed sub and decides to kill her with kindness and over the next four weeks places her to sexual places she has only imagined and she begins to feel a connection to him as he does to her. Of course, she gives him her submission and he gets the tattoo that identifies him as a Master and they continue outside of the Club to have a relationship.

Parts of this book were very moving because Kenzie had to overcome some major barriers in order to give her submission to Porter and the beauty of it brought tears to my eyes.  I know, I’m probably the only person to cry while reading erotic novels. Other parts were  on the humorous side but it goes without saying that the majority was just hot, steamy, sex scenes.

Five stars *****
