The Bride (The Boss #3) by Abigail Barnette

Book Description:

Format: Audio/Audible

After a tumultuous year, Sophie Scaife’s relationship with her boyfriend and Dom, billionaire media mogul Neil Elwood, is hotter and happier than ever. His sizzling Dominant side pushes Sophie to new and challenging heights of submission and erotic exploration as she follows her Sir’s every whim. But with his daughter’s impending wedding and a milestone birthday turning Neil’s thoughts toward settling down, Sophie faces a much different future than she’d planned.

Caught in a conflict between her new wealth and her desire for independence, Sophie fears she’s becoming just another Fifth Avenue trophy wife. With her fashion journalism career over and her new effort as a writer uninspiring, Sophie has to work harder than ever to prove her intentions to Neil’s family and friends.

Sophie isn’t the only one struggling to adapt to her new lifestyle. When private jets and designer labels threaten her bond with Holli, Sophie finds herself walking a fine line between the world she now inhabits and the past—and people—she fears she’s left behind. After a shocking revelation divides her loyalties, Sophie is in danger of losing her best friend or fracturing the trust of the man she loves.

Review –

Following on from the angst-fest that was The Girlfriend, this was a much lighter read, but it still cleverly deals with all the issues that remain – their twenty-five year age difference, his ex, his continued recovery, his need to take (as Sophie charmingly calls them) ‘boner tablets’, her lack of career, getting used to his money (yeah, like that would be challenging), her mother’s hostile reaction to Neil, and her daddy issues. There’s no overblown drama in this, the dramatic tension comes from subtle observations of people’s behaviour – oh and Sophie ‘s ongoing eavesdropping habit.
The sex scenes are incredibly hot – like, wow, a mix of scorching hot D/s scenes and lust-filled panty-burning intimacy. They get really kinky in this installment.
My favorite thing about this whole series and particularly this book is the relationship between Sophie and Neil, their in-jokes, how attuned they are to each other’s emotions. I could read books like this all day!

The Girlfriend (The Boss #2) by Abigail Barnette

Book Description:

Published: August 17, 2019

Format: Audio/Audible

Unemployed, blacklisted, and pregnant, Sophie Scaife’s life is totally upside down. Her relationship with publishing magnate Neil Elwood is on the rocks. Her best friend’s career is igniting. And Sophie is afraid she’ll make one of the toughest decisions of her life alone…

When a devastating diagnosis forces Neil to return to London, Sophie throws caution to the wind to follow her heart across the Atlantic. Keeping a scorching D/s affair as red-hot in sickness as it was in health is a challenge, even for two lovers as inventive as Sophie and Neil. But Sophie is more than willing to try anything her Sir commands, and their fantasies of control become a welcome refuge from the daily stress of illness.

While Neil’s wealth and privilege make adjusting to her new situation easier, Sophie finds herself rebuilding her life around an uncertain future. And while both of them face the changes between them head-on, they’re all too aware that their happiness may be fleeting—and Sophie could lose Neil forever.

Review –

The Boss ends with the cliffhanger that Sophie is pregnant, and The Girlfriend picks up from there. I pretty much guessed how that plot was going to be resolved by the blurb for this book, and I was right. Though I have no problem with the manner in which the situation was resolved, it was very unpleasant to read about it.Now, after finishing the book, I have to wonder why that sub-plot was even there to begin with. One of the author’s criticisms of “Fifty Shades of Grey” (in her wonderful “Jenny Reads Fifty Shades” series on her blog) was that there are pointless sub-plots that do nothing to really move the story forward. I think the pregnancy cliffhanger/subplot was pretty much the same thing. If anything it existed merely so that the author could point out just out feminist, PC, and not-FSOG this book is/tries to be. And really, that continues through the entire story.

There is a very REAL depiction of what it’s like to be a care giver to a cancer patient on high dose chemotherapathy and the changes mentally and physically that the patient can undergo. The book also talks about using the good days of cancer treatment to keep the relationship alive by having inventive sex. I feel  because this book is written by a female all of this information was done magnificently. A male wouldn’t have been as caring in the detail. There also is a description of an abortion that is very graphic and therefore could be a trigger for some readers or listeners.

I really liked this book more than the first because we came to see Sophia and Neil is much more depth.

When their scorching, no-strings-attached sexual relationship becomes something more, Sophie must choose between her career and heart… or risk losing them both.

Review –

I believe this may be the first BDSM/contemporary romance written by a woman that Ive read and I found that not only are the sex scenes amazingly hot, but the characters are well developed and seem like real people, not caricatures. This book portrays a good relationship with proper communication, boundaries, and an equal partnership even with the economic/age disparity. The D/s aspects of the story make sure to stress concepts like consent, safewording, and aftercare. The wealth of likeable and love-to-hate characters span a wide range of diversity and don’t fall into the usual clichés you’d expect from this kind of story, which is refreshing and wonderful.

The build-up to the cliffhanger and the cliffhanger itself was expertly done and my heart is currently aching wondering how the heroine and hero will handle the next stage of their lives. I’m looking forward to the second book.

My recommendation is: if you can get over the age difference (twenty-four years), navigate through the sexual athleticism, and the fact of the cliffhanger ending, you’ll enjoy this novel.

This is a series of seven books and I don’t know if I will read them all, but I’m definitely reading the next one to see what happens.

*Given is a full-length standalone DARK romance with an HEA, no cheating, and no cliffhanger.

Review –

While I like usually enjoy the writings of Lauren Landish, this one fell flat. It was very predicitable and totally unrealistic, especially when it came to Arianna’s injuries from the whipping Danny gave her. Supposedly it was done over three hours and when rescued Zander had his doctor stitch her up and that night she felt well enough to cuddle is bed ???!!!!! I DON’T THINK SO.

Given is the fourth book featuring the men of Club X, it is however the first I’ve read may go back for the others, if nothing else, to see if they are more realistic.

Blackwood by Celia Aaron

Book Description:

Published: January 8, 2017

Format: Audio/Audible

I dig. It’s what I do. I’ll literally use a shovel to answer a question. Some answers, though, have been buried too deep for too long. But I’ll find those, too. And I know where to dig—the Blackwood Estate on the edge of the Mississippi Delta. Garrett Blackwood is the only thing standing between me and the truth. A broken man—one with desires that dance in the darkest part of my soul—he’s either my savior or my enemy. I’ll dig until I find all his secrets. Then I’ll run so he never finds mine. The only problem? He likes it when I run.

Author’s Note: This is a standalone mystery/suspense romance with violence and explicit/intense sex. If you need a trigger warning, then this isn’t the book for you.

Review –

Elise Vale is working on her Ph.D in archaeology, focusing on Choctaw culture. She has the perfect site in mind for her next dig, Blackwood Estate, located in the Louisiana Delta Region. She hopes to find not only some Native American artifacts, but also to uncover a mystery. She has a hidden agenda and she’s willing to do anything to solve a mystery that’s been plaguing her.  Now, the only thing she has to do is to make sure the owner of the Estate allows her to survey the land.

Garrett Blackwood is the thirty-two years old reclusive owner of Blackwood Estate. A former history professor, Garrett has a nasty reputation. He doesn’t want anyone digging on his property and makes sure Elise knows that. But Elise doesn’t let Garrett deter her and she’s ready to do anything to find out THE TRUTH, even forging the documents she needs to get the funding.

As time passes, Elise realizes that digging for answers can be dangerous, but also that Garrett might be the biggest mystery on Blackwood Estate.

Mysterious, sexy and fascinating, Blackwood, was fantastically written in such an intriguing way. I couldn’t put it down for one minute, the mystery/suspense and also the multitude of twists and turns sucking me in from the start. The storytelling was really engaging, the story becoming more and more captivating with every single chapter. The author did a wonderful job blending the thriller/mystery aspect with the erotic. The story was hot and passionate with plenty of sexy times that I’m sure will leave you hot and bothered.

The two main characters were well portrayed, fascinating and I enjoyed reading about them. The chemistry between them was hot…to say the least from the beginning. I enjoyed how their relationship unfolded – gradually – their entertaining interactions and how sexy they were at times. The sex scenes between them were extremely hot, their connection being so palpable as the story unfolded.

Elise was a great heroine, smart, loyal and courageous, she was a strong character and I have to say that I loved her determination. Garrett was a very intriguing hero. While at first, he’s rude and grumpy, as the story unfolded and his relationship with Elise started to change, he became a total different man – kind, sweet, caring, but still gruff and so very manly. I liked these two together and how perfectly they completed each other. The romantic aspect was well done and the rough sex handled very well.

All in all, Blackwood, was a fantastic mystery/thriller I recommend if you are looking for a gripping read filled with steam, action and suspense.

Birthday Girl by Penelope Douglas

Book Description:

Published: April 17, 2019

Format: Audio/Audible

From New York Times Bestselling author Penelope Douglascomes a new forbidden love story…

JORDAN

He took me in when I had nowhere else to go.

He doesn’t use me, hurt me, or forget about me. He doesn’t treat me like I’m nothing, take me for granted, or make me feel unsafe.

He remembers me, laughs with me, and looks at me. He listens to me, protects me, and sees me. I can feel his eyes on me over the breakfast table, and my heart pumps so hard when I hear him pull in the driveway after work.

I have to stop this. It can’t happen.

My sister once told me there are no good men, and if you find one, he’s probably unavailable.

Only Pike Lawson isn’t the unavailable one.

I am.

PIKE

I took her in, because I thought I was helping.

She’d cook a few meals and clean up a little. It was an easy arrangement.

As the days go by, though, it’s becoming anything but easy. I have to stop my mind from drifting to her and stop holding my breath every time I bump into her in the house. I can’t touch her, and I shouldn’t want to.

The more I find my path crossing hers, though, the more she’s becoming a part of me.

But we’re not free to give into this. She’s nineteen, and I’m thirty-eight.

And her boyfriend’s father.

Unfortunately, they both just moved into my house.

*BIRTHDAY GIRL is a stand-alone, contemporary romance suitable for ages 18+.

Review –

I’ve been saving this book to read this month because I am a Birthday Girl too. Oh, not like Jordan, I was just lucky enough to be born on the 17th of this month.

Anyway, I LOVED this book. It is a taboo, forbidden romance with a large age gap. It involved Jordan, nineteen, her boyfriend Cole, also nineteen and his father Pike, who is thirty-eight. Because of circumstances the teens have to move into Pike’s house while they save money to get another place of their own. There is immediate sexual chemistry between Pike and Jordan and the story is told in their dual POV.

Pike fights hard against the attraction and temptation of Jordan because of what people will think but more importantly of how it would affect his son. Jordan fights too but when Cole cheats on her, she sees it as the perfect chance to see what would happen if she gave in.

Eventually they both give in and start sleeping together and Cole finds out and there is a separation. I’m not going to give away the ending but know that I cried a bucket load of tears. AND, the epilogue …!

This book is Five Stars and if you love a good forbidden romance, this one should be on the top of your TBR list.

Ruined (Decadence After Dark #3) by M. Never

Book Description:

Kayne Roberts.
Kayne Rivers.
Kayne Stevens.

No matter his name, one fact remains the same. He’s the man who enslaved me, ensnared me, claimed me and ruined me… For all other men that is.

My life.
My love
My happiness.
All belong to him.
I belong to no one but him.

He owns me.
And I own him.

Review –

Ruined is the third book in the Decadence After Dark series and is a novella epilogue to Kayne and Ellie’s story. Ruined cannot be read as a standalone.
Ellie and Kayne have been through a lot – together and apart – since they first met. From the beginning of this series, when these two characters were first introduced in Owned, readers were brought into this captivatingly, dark world of BDSM, prostitution, and drug dealing. Only that world wasn’t as black and white as it seemed. The second book, Claimed, picked up a year after the ending events of Owned and Ellie was thrust back into Kayne’s world by her own choosing. Ruined is the follow-up epilogue to the previous books.
While short, the author  takes readers on an emotional journey that will tug you in so many different ways and have you experiencing a vast array of emotions just as the previous two books have done so. The way that Never wraps up Ellie and Kayne’s story is done in an utterly spectacular manner that leaves readers with a sense of peace when thinking of this couple,( I still don’t like her crawling away though) especially since those of us have read this series from the beginning know that these two characters have not had it easy.
This is such an utterly gripping and captivating series, Decadence After Dark is dark and not for the faint of heart, but it also is a bright spot. Ellie and Kayne’s “love” story is a unique one for sure, but it’s theirs. From the very beginning I have fallen in love with this couple and had high hopes for them. M Never did not disappoint!

Kayne Rivers reluctantly let Ellie go, but just because she’s gone now, doesn’t mean she’ll be gone forever. She is his, and he won’t stop until he’s reclaimed her as his own.

Review –

Great ending to Kayne and Ellie’s HEA. A little suspense, a lot of romance, hot sex, and kinky hot sex. Plus we get to see more of Jett and his girl London. Beware there’s a four-some in this part as well as some F/F. Don’t really like that he makes her crawl around.

Ellie was so much stronger in this book and got out of her own head enough to just be herself and be honest about what she wanted. Kayne  was very dominating in an almost wicked way in Owned but in this book he was no longer wicked, just in love and his need was more devouring than dark. I loved that Jet and  London were a big part of this book too. Besides all the feels this book had a TON of sex! Like A TON!!!! It was hot, exciting and adventurous.

Muffy and  Sam are both incredible narrators and they seriously didn’t disappoint in this book. I could listen to them both all day every day! This is about 90% Muffy & 10% Sam which was okay with me since she does a great male voice too!

Review –

I read the Kindle version of this book in 2015 and I found it on Audible in their Romance Package so I decided to read (listen) to it a second time.

What I really liked about this book compared to a lot of BDSM focused books is that Ellie’s had a thing for Kayne for awhile. You usually see it where the heroine is a little more reluctant to get into a relationship with the enigmatic businessman, but I felt Ellie was a little more of the kind of person  who knows what she likes, even if she’s a little too afraid to go get it at first. There’s reasons, and they make sense, but I just liked that she liked him!

And Kayne… he’s got more than enough secrets for the both of them. He’s holding back in a way, too. While Ellie is keeping a safe distance from Kayne for business reasons, he’s keeping his secrets for his own personal reasons. The contrast was a really interesting mix that I enjoyed. There’s a lot of reasons for them to not be together, but I still wanted them to come together.

And, oh boy, when they threw caution to the wind and went for it, it was smoldering! The sex scenes are intense. I loved the Master/slave aspect, too. It’s not something you really see in a lot of books, at least not to this level. I liked that this kind of shed light on a different side to BDSM than the usual, and while some parts left me feeling a little worried, I enjoyed reading it a lot.

As long as you know what you’re getting into, this is a great book. It’s got those mysteries and forbidden attractions that I can’t seem to get enough of, the steaming hot sex scenes that I want in almost all of my books, and watching the story and relationship unfold between Ellie and Kayne was really exciting. They’re a cute couple, despite being more than a little kinky, ha,I loved them!

Listening to the book was sooo much hotter than reading it. The narrators, Muffy Newtown and San Crowley, do a fantastic job and make it blistering hot!!!!

Please heed the above warning because there could be many triggers in this book/series.

Or will two lost souls living in the depths of deception let it destroy them?

Review –

Affliction is the second book in the Knights Rebels series, and is Holly and Sy’s story. I enjoyed seeing these two come together, and it doesn’t happen in the average way. Both of the characters suffer from a trauma, and you see how they help each other heal, despite the secrets they both keep from each other. I want to keep this review straight and to the point so I don’t give out too many spoilers, but what I enjoyed most from this story was seeing the emotional development. There is quite a bit of sensual interludes, and boy are they HOT!! So no worries on that score, but you also see that as the plot develops you see the character become more entrenched in the story, and we see Sy and Holly grow emotionally. This is a roller coaster of grief, pain, determination, and finding love exactly when you need it most. For those that haven’t tried this author or the first book, I would highly recommend you try out the first book, Incandescent because you get more background on the story and trust me you won’t regret it if you enjoy biker romances.

I did think the book was way too long and could have been cut back by at least a third.
