In a city where someone is murdered almost every day, attorney Michael Abramowitz’s death should be just another statistic. But the slain lawyer’s notoriety—and his taste for illicit midday trysts—makes the case front-page news in every local paper except the Star, which crashed and burned before Abramowitz did.
A former Star reporter who knows every inch of this town—from historic Fort McHenry to the crumbling projects of Cherry Hill—now-unemployed journalist Tess Monaghan also knows the primary suspect: cuckolded fiancé Darryl “Rock” Paxton. The time is ripe for a career move, so when rowing buddy Rock wants to hire her to do some unorthodox snooping to help clear his name, Tess agrees. But there are lethal secrets hiding in the Charm City shadows. And Tess’s own name could end up on the ever-expanding list of Baltimore dead.
The Baltimore Star has recently folded and Tess is out of a job. She gets by with the assistance of her family and friends where it is not always easy. She makes peace with her self every morning by practicing her rowing at the local river. One day her rowing buddy, Darryl ‘Rock’ Paxton offers her money to try track his fiancés. Rock finds her to be a bit distant and wishes to know what has been going on. Tess has a special place for Rock and she will do as he asked. She has met Paxton’s fiancés, Ava Hill on several occasions but has never really liked her.
At first she takes the job as a lark but discovers that she enjoys it. She learns that Ava is a shoplifter and that she might be having an affair with her boss at her law firm, Michael Abramowitz. When Tess confronts Ava she tells her that she better come clean with Darryl before she tells him about her investigation. Ava is one step ahead and contacts Rock before Tess can call him so she can make up a plausible story. The next day Darryl Paxton is arrested for the murder of Michael Abramowitz.
Tess is conflicted and feels responsible in putting her friend under this predicament. She will work hard in proving his innocence and learn about the secrets the lawyer was hiding.Need we say? Tess proves to be a little too good at her research, and soon her life is in danger as well
The author provides several red herrings throughout the story and several minor characters tees that added color to the story.
I love Laura Lippman but this is my first Tess Monaghan series book and I look forward to reading more.
