Afterlife by Marcus Sakey

Between life and death lies an epic war, a relentless manhunt through two worlds… and an unforgettable love story.

The last thing FBI agent Will Brody remembers is the explosion — a thousand shards of glass surfing a lethal shock wave. He wakes without a scratch. The building is in ruins. His team is gone. Outside, Chicago is dark. Cars lie abandoned. No planes cross the sky. He’s relieved to spot other people — until he sees they’re carrying machetes.

Welcome to the afterlife.

Claire McCoy stands over the body of Will Brody. As head of an FBI task force, she hasn’t had a decent night’s sleep in weeks. A terrorist has claimed eighteen lives and thrown the nation into panic. Against this horror, something reckless and beautiful happened. She fell in love… with Will Brody. But the line between life and death is narrower than any of us suspect — and all that matters to Will and Claire is getting back to each other.

Review

This book will appeal to some, including fans of Lost or Stephen King’s novels, but it’s certainly not for everyone (including me).  It’s  incredibly dark and violent, with graphic scenes involving cannibalism and murder, among other things. Coming in somewhere between a horror story and a supernatural thriller, Afterlife, is a dark, gory, and twisted novel that, while trying to deliver a more profound message, ends up falling short of its goal.

I can not believe the movie rights were snapped up and Ron Howard is involved, BUT I still will not be buying a ticket!

Two stars.

Because Poppy is the spitting image of Ellie when she was that age.
And now all those unanswered questions that have haunted Laurel come flooding back.

Review –

“Laurel Mack’s life stopped in many ways the day her fifteen year-old daughter, Ellie, left the house to study at the library and never returned.

She drifted away from her other two children, Hanna and Jake, and eventually she and her husband, Paul, divorced.

Ten years later, Ellie’s remains and her backpack are found, though the police are unable to determine the reasons for her disappearance and death. After Ellie’s funeral, Laurel begins a relationship with Floyd, a man she meets in a cafe. She’s disarmed by Floyd’s charm, but when she meets his young daughter, Poppy, Laurel is startled by her resemblance to Ellie.

As the novel progresses, Laurel becomes increasingly determined to learn what happened to Ellie, especially after discovering an odd connection between Poppy’s mother and her daughter even as her relationship with Floyd is becoming more serious.

The book is split into three sections, including a first one which alternates chapters between the time of Ellie’s disappearance and the present and a second section that begins as Laurel and Floyd meet. Both of these sections primarily focus on Laurel. In the third section, Jewell alternates narrators and moments in time: The narrator switches to alternating first-person points of view (told by Poppy’s mother and Floyd) interspersed with third-person narration of Ellie’s experiences and Laurel’s discoveries in the present. All of these devices serve to build palpable tension, but the structure also contributes to how deeply disturbing the story becomes.” Kirkus Reviews

You will not believe the ending!!!

The book is dark and unsettling but so good.  Five stars!

But when Tenley’s past shows up on her doorstep, will Hayden stand by her side…or run?

Review –

This is a love story between two very damaged souls, who become co-dependant on each other .

When Tenley asks tattoo artist Hayden to ink an intricate design on her back, he is immediately intrigued by her and senses that she is hiding something from him. Something dark and tragic. He feels this immediate chemistry and connection with her. He senses the suffering and loneliness that they both share.

With all his ink and piercings, Hayden represents everything that Tenley has longed for. A wildness and freedom that she has never dared to take. She sees him as an escape from the pain she is suffering, but the emotional connection they begin to have together is more than she expected. A bond that goes beyond the physical. Both are hiding secrets, Tenley lost nine people, including her parents and fiancée in a plane crash and she blames herself, Hayden, found his parents shot to death in their bedroom and he blames himself. He also has a past full of drugs and sexual exploits with multiple women.

Neither are willing to share their past with the other and this leads to misunderstandings and hurt feelings. When Trey, Tenley’s fiancée’s brother, comes to her about an estate situation she packs up and goes back to Minnesota to put things right. She leaves without explaining anything to Hayden. This is where Book One ends,

Listening to this story was like witnessing a train wreck. I knew that their relationship was doomed because of the lack of communication. They thought having extremely good sex, often, would be enough to secure them as a couple .,

I have already started Book Two, Inked Armor, and can’t wait to finish it.

Could this new tragedy be connected to Alice’s mysterious disappearance?

As events take a dramatic and deadly turn, Bodine and Callen must race to uncover the truth – before the sun sets on their future together.

Review –

Nora Roberts always tells a good story that balances romance and suspense, but in this title, the narrative is deeper, the mystery is more layered, and with Alice, Roberts moves into another level of exploring physical and emotional trauma and the powerful healing power of family and love.

If you haven’t guessed-I’ve given this book five stars!  Once I started this book, it was very hard to stop listening, it was seventeen hours and seventeen minutes long, so I had to stop in order to keep up the appearance of do a little something around the house.

Over two decades ago, rebellious Alice Bodine ran away from her Montana home to make her fortune in Hollywood—only to head back three years later. But her return was derailed when she was captured and made prisoner by an off the grid religious fanatic. Flash to the present day, when the Bodine estate is a thriving dude ranch and luxury resort. Bodine Longbow, Alice’s niece, works hard ensuring that the day-to-day operations at the resort run smoothly, even as she comes face-to-face with her childhood crush, Callen Skinner, who has returned to Montana from California. As the attraction builds between Callen and Bodine, Alice miraculously escapes her captor and is welcomed back into the family fold. Her tale of abuse and torture at the hands of her captor coincides with the recent brutal murder of two young women. The suspense continues to rise as law enforcement searches for the killer and Alice’s kidnapper.

The combination of details of ranch/resort life, the strength of the women of the family, mixed with romance and mystery make this a five-star read, for sure.

Definitel   put this one on your TBR list!
