Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys

Book Description:

Published: February 2, 2016

World War II is drawing to a close in East Prussia and thousands of refugees are on a desperate trek toward freedom, many with something to hide. Among them are Joana, Emilia, and Florian, whose paths converge en route to the ship that promises salvation, the Wilhelm Gustloff. Forced by circumstance to unite, the three find their strength, courage, and trust in each other tested with each step closer to safety.

Just when it seems freedom is within their grasp, tragedy strikes. Not country, nor culture, nor status matter as all ten thousand people—adults and children alike—aboard must fight for the same thing: survival.

Told in alternating points of view, this masterful work of historical fiction is inspired by the real-life tragedy that was the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff—the greatest maritime disaster in history. As she did in Between Shades of Gray, Ruta Sepetys unearths a shockingly little-known casualty of a gruesome war, and proves that humanity and love can prevail, even in the darkest of hours.

Although this book is technically a young adult book ( and I highly recommend it to ALL young adults because they must know what can happen when the person in charge of a country has no respect for human life – they see things like this on television and movies but most of them don’t care enough to learn the truth behind he images) I, as an adult, found it haunting, captivating, heart wrenching and hard to believe.

I don’t want to give too much away, but all of the main characters in the book do not survive and it broke my heart . I had the audio version and had to turn it off in some places while driving because of the tears forming in my eyes.

It is the best historical fiction that I had read or listened to in a very long time and although the characters were not real  people, I’m fairly certain that out of the ten thousand  people crammed onto the evacuation ship there were stories just like the ones in this book.

The sinking of the MV Wilhelm Gustloff is the single greatest maritime disaster in history yet, to many, the story remains unknown .It is a poignant, heart-breaking and should be on everyone’s TBR list.

For more information on  Operation Hannibal and this disaster check out the following link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MV_Wilhelm_Gustloff

^Side Note:

I have not read Between Shades of Gray, by this author, mentioned in the blurb above, but I intend to very soon.

Daddy’s Girl by Lisa Scottoline

Book Description:

Published: March 13, 2007

The unlikely heroine of this Lisa Scottoline thriller (which follows 2006’s Dirty Blonde), mousy University of Pennsylvania assistant law professor Natalie “Nat” Greco, finds herself in way over her head when an unintended visit to a minimum-security prison in nearby Chester County puts her in the middle of a deadly uprising — and places her at the center of an elaborate plot that involves an incarcerated crime boss and more than a few improbable conspirators.

Greco’s classes at Penn Law — the History of Justice, for example — aren’t nearly as well attended as those taught by charismatic and handsome prof Angus Holt. Greco herself is far from immune to Holt’s charm, so when he asks her to accompany him to Chester County Correctional Institution to lecture to inmates involved in an externship program, she quickly agrees. But the professors’ visit soon turns deadly; a riot erupts, and amid the chaos Greco finds herself alone with a dying correctional officer who has been stabbed through the heart with a metal shank. His last words are a cryptic  message to his wife: “It’s under the floor.” Soon thereafter, Greco is inexplicably set up for the murder of a state trooper and is forced to become a fugitive from justice while she tries to unravel the mystery of the dying man’s words.

While not as sexually supercharged or frenetically paced as Dirty Blonde, Daddy’s Girl derives its power from the subtle and compelling coming-of-age of protagonist Greco, a sheltered and socially naive woman who, when faced with the ultimate adversity, discovers herself.

I have mixed feelings about this book, though overall positive I did find it a bit daunting to keep up with all of the action., if you can believe that. I mean, it had a prison riot and break out, road blocks , a vice dean on her case, plus family and boyfriend trouble. It wore me out. It’s really just an adult Nancy Drew mystery.

The end had a surprise twist and even though it was a bit cliché, it was still perfect.

Not the best but not the worst.

Review –

When Hannah steps into Door Four she is dressed in maids uniform of sorts and is the “new girl” in the Killian household, Yes, KILLIAN. Same name but in this door he plays an entirely different kind of man. A stern, controlling, and I believe a sexual sadist. He is hosting a poker game with ten men counting Killian and tonight they will not be playing for money. Instead, it will be strip poker but only Hannah will be losing her clothes and the man winning the hand will own that piece of clothing. The night progresses as you may expect with the drunk men groping her breasts and bare thighs. Killian never touches her. The night ends with Charlie (the blonde drifter from door three) winning the final hand.

The next night is another poker game but this time Hannah is for all intents and purposes naked and tied to a chair. When a man wins a hand he is allowed to do anything he can to her with his tongue and hands. We have it all,  Anal play, Light Bondage, F/F Scene, Oral Delight, Squirting, Stripping and Voyeurism. I’m no prude but it was a bit much. Only Killian, when he wins the final hand has actual intercourse with Hannah and the next morning tells her that she has to go. She opens the door and looks back at Killian, wishing she could stay but knowing she can’t.

Back in the BLACK ROOM she doesn’t hesitate to go to the next door hoping she will find Killian again. Door five has a huge lions head door knocker in the middle of the door and she has to pull on the ring. It takes both hands to pull it and slides open on silent hinges.

She’s now in a courtyard with archways and cobblestones and a huge castle in the distance. Once at the castle, guards tell her that “He’s expecting you” so she ascends more stairs and finds Killian on a throne like chair dressed all in white and he tells her she is a prize that he won in a battle and to tell him why he should keep her.  Cliffhanger.

Door three picks up right where door two left off. The mountain man, Conrad Killian, has purchased Hannah for sexual companionship and the journey to his cabin will take four days by horseback, in the snow and through a mountain pass.

On their journey they meet Charlie, a drifter, who shares their fire one night. He tries to buy Hannah from Conrad but of course Conrad refuses and Charlie threatens him, saying he’s made a big mistake.

Once at the cabin, which is small and very utilitarian, with only one bed,  Hannah tells him she’s not ready for sex  and he tells her she will be and tells her to get undressed down to a thin wool slip. He doesn’t insist on sex that night because they are both tired from all the traveling. He tells her to give their situation a month and if she’s not happy he will take her  to Denver and set her up. She agrees.

Conrad tells her he lost his wife in an Indian battle and has been a recluse ever since.

Days go by and Hannah finds herself very sexually attracted to the handsome mountain man and one thing leads to another and they have very hot sex, A LOT!  It goes on like that until one day Charlie shows up at the cabin and kidnaps Hannah. They get several miles away and Conrad tracks them down and kills Charlie and on their way back to the cabin they are surrounded by an Indian party. The indians want Hannah and the horses by Conrad talks them into taking only his horse and coming to the cabin for some others. Hannah and Conrad have hot  sex on the porch after the Indian go and afterwards he tells her she has to go. He opens the door and she walks through leaving him behind.

Everything is quiet and she’s back in the BLACK ROOM on the white cot with the small black table to her left and on it the thick white candle. Now there are only five doors, three black, one silver and one green.

Hannah wants Conrad back, any version of him, and so she gets up and goes to door four and turns an ornate brass doorknob  and steps over a threshold .  Can anyone say CLIFFHANGER?

Door three has been my favorite so far because of the time period it takes place  and the handsome mountain man who was a kind, attentive, and very skilled lover.

So once she leaves the “fighter” she’s back in the BLACK ROOM on the cot with the black side table with the candle on top. Almost immediately  she goes to door two and opens it and walks right into a beautiful high-rise apartment. She hears voices and smells bacon and finds a very handsome man cooking breakfast. There is another couple there also.

It seems she and the man fixing breakfast had a bad argument the night before and of course she has no idea what about but with certain cues from him she thinks he wanted to have a three-way and she didn’t. So, she suggests that’s what they do and soon the other man is there and they have a three-way. After some time and some very explicit sex, they stop but then the woman is there and so the female, who is going from door to door, invites the woman to join in and so another three-way is started. One it’s over she knows it’s time to go and ends up back in the BLACK ROOM and soon goes to door number three and ends up on a stage with 19 other women. Several men are in the room purchasing the women and a good-looking man with a beard buys her and off they go on horseback.

Since I’ve never fantasized about a MMF or a FFM door two didn’t do a whole lot for me. I gave it four out of five stars.

Here is what the author, herself, had to say about this series:

Dear WILDer Readers,

I need to tell you a little story about this series. This is like nothing I’ve published before. It might even be like nothing you’ve ever read before. In fact, it’s so different that I’ve gone back and forth about even publishing it at all for about a year. At one point I did even publish a part and then took it down; yes, it has the potential to be that controversial. Encouraged by my amazing WILD WITH WILDER Facebook reader group, I’ve gained the courage to hit “publish.”

It all started with a conversation with a friend about sexual fantasies, I’m going to call her Jade…Jade London. In talking with her, this story popped into my head inspired by a few of her fantasies and experiences. So just for fun, I started writing THE BLACK ROOM. Now, these stories are told in the voice I had in my head of my friend Jade, so you will notice it might be different from my other work and she is also credited as an author, since she was the inspiration for it. Yes, this series is very explicit, enough so that I would call it more like erotica/suspense with an erotic romance theme. If you have been offended by scenes in Madame X, Alpha, or Stripped I will tell you it’s probably best to skip this series all together. The sex scenes in these books are beyond even my hottest level.

You’ve been warned.

The layout and pricing of this series is also a bit unusual. I really wanted the reader to have to “enter” each door, I wanted you to have to take that step to enter the next room. So, artistically, I knew that having them stand alone as 8 separate doors was important. I also wanted to keep the pricing in line with my other books, and the only way that really made sense for me to do that was to make doors 1, 3, 5 and 7 free. Yes, I realize there are people that might take advantage of that and just skip the other doors. But, if you really want to have a unique and powerful reading experience I suggest reading all of them in order. I am publishing all 8 novellas at once because each one does create a bit of a cliffy, and I didn’t want to leave you hanging.

This series is over 800 pages in my usual print format at nearly 200,000 words, so we made the print edition larger, like my BIG GIRLS omnibus, so we could get it all in if you wanted the full collection in print. I’ll be sure to link that below. Shout out to Okay Creations and Champagne Formatting for a beautiful job on the print edition. It’s a piece of art.

I really do hope that you will take this journey with me into THE BLACK ROOM. It’s a story of a woman’s experiences in fantasies that I felt needed to be told. It’s erotic, emotional, and raw.

In Door One we, the readers, don’t know how the woman became to be in the BLACK ROOM, but neither does she. She can’t remember anything: her name, what she does, how she got there or if she really exists.

In the BLACK ROOM there is a cot and a small side table with a candle that provides the only light. Around the large expanse of the room are eight doors and when she walks through number one (and she feel compelled to do so) she sees a large muscled fighter with a broken nose and scars all over his body.  He binds her with ropes and suspends her from the ceiling and eventually, after a lot of bondage foreplay, they have very rough sex and then he tells her  to  leave because she shouldn’t be there. She doesn’t want to go but knows she has to.

When she arrives back in the BLACK ROOM there are only seven doors, door one has disappeared .(How’s that for eerie?)

Colby can feel an surging attraction to Jax but is she ready to enter the strange and dark world of BDSM? Is it too dangerous to get physical with a future business partner? Or will Colby’s body give in to its undeniable urges?

This ebook contains very hot and explicit descriptions of sexual activity.  Only mature readers should download this book.

Review –

The first  free digital book ended in a super cliffhanger so I HAD  to get the complete set to see where the author took these characters.

Although there is a very strong sexual under tone to this story there is also humor. Colby had no idea what BDSM stood for or how the various pieces of sexually oriented  furniture were used. Jax was more than willing to show her the various uses and she discovered she was drawn to the life style the more he showed her. The series of books ends with a HEA and this is a series that could easily be read more than once.

Great read.

Plus, there are still so many things to find out: Who’s King of Diamonds? Will she meet Poseidon again? And who has asked her to meet him in the Club house? One of the two, or someone else entirely?

Review –

This is the second book in the Dark Alley  series and deals with Alice/ Belladonna’s next adventures at the Dark Alley. The main focus is the change between the very normal Alice and her new persona, Belladonna. When she puts on her mask and enters ‘Dark Alley’  she becomes a very different person, a very darker person.

This trip into The Dark Alley was more adventurous than the last one, so, if you like some soft BDSM with intriguing sex scenes then this is for you.

I purchased this audio book because of the price ($6.00) and it was a first time listen of this author, so I have not read or listened to books one and two in The Sinclairs series.

That being said, I loved this book.

In The Billionaire’s Touch we follow Evan Sinclair and Miranda Tyler and get to watch them fall in love over the course of the book. When listening about Evan’s and Miranda’s past you really feel for them individually but they are both such strong characters and watching them help each other, open up and support each other makes their sexual chemistry and tension between them even hotter.

I fell in love with the Sinclair brothers and cousins so I may have to look for other books in The Sinclairs  series.

Great read.
