Hidden Bodies (You #2) by Caroline Kepnes

Book Description:

Published: February 23, 2016

Joe Goldberg is no stranger to hiding bodies. In the past ten years, this thirty-something has buried four of them, collateral damage in his quest for love. Now he’s heading west to Los Angeles, the city of second chances, determined to put his past behind him.

In Hollywood, Joe blends in effortlessly with the other young upstarts. He eats guac, works in a bookstore, and flirts with a journalist neighbor. But while others seem fixated on their own reflections, Joe can’t stop looking over his shoulder. The problem with hidden bodies is that they don’t always stay that way. They re-emerge, like dark thoughts, multiplying and threatening to destroy what Joe wants most: true love. And when he finds it in a darkened room in  Soho House, he’s more desperate than ever to keep his secrets

Review –

Joe Goldberg is a man you definitely don’t want to add to your list of friends because he may decide he wants to kill you.

In this, the second in the YOU series, Joe has met Amy and fallen head over heals for her and he thinks she feels the same way until one day wakes up and discovers that she has left him and stolen first editions from a book store he runs. She goes to Hollywood to become an actress and Joe, obsessed as ever, follows her with a plan to kill her.

Once there he realizes it will be harder to find Amy than he though so while living his new life in California he meets and “falls in love” with Love, the daughter of a wealthy grocery store chain owning family. He determines that he wants to seriously spend the rest of his life with love and eliminates anyone who gets in his way and hides the bodies, hopefully where they won’t be found. BUT, will Joe be able to elude the authorities and stay a free man or will he trip up and get caught?

You’ll have to read the book to find out.  It is dark and funny at the same time and I can’t wait for the next installment because surely there will be a #3, right, Ms. Kepnes??????

Fantastic read!

Private Vegas (Private #9) by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro

Book Description:

Published: January 26, 2015

What happens in Vegas…stays Private.

Las Vegas is a city of contradictions: seedy and glamorous, secretive and wild, Vegas attracts people of all kinds–especially those with a secret to hide, or a life to leave behind. It’s the perfect location for Lester Olsen’s lucrative business. He gets to treat gorgeous, young women to five-star restaurants, splashy shows, and limo rides–and then he teaches them how to kill.

Private Jack Morgan spends most of his time in Los Angeles, where his top investigation firm has its headquarters. But a hunt for two criminals leads him to the city of sin–and to a murder ring that is more seductively threatening than anything he’s witnessed before.

Review –

Another pleasant read in the Private series by James Patterson (and others) and this one takes place in the Glitter and Glitz Capital of the World, Las Vegas. As in all of the Private  books, there are several stories going at once; there is murders, mystery, diplomatic immunity, scumbags, friendships, old loves and new chapters to be started and although Jack Morgan is the primary focus of the book there are several things that will affect him for the rest of his life and naturally, the book ends with a cliffhanger.

I guess I will have to hunt down #10!

Review –

This story is  unique with plot twists coming at you when you least expect it and the  characters are not perfect and have inner conflicts and emotional problems caused by events in their past.  Although there is a great amount of tragedy, heartache and pain in this novel, there is also a great amount of love and romance to be read.

Review –

Not an awarding winning read by any means but a pleasant book to listen to during a hot Oklahoma Spring day. It has everything a good  crime fiction story should have: murder, kidnapping, mystery, suspense, drama and interesting characters to put all the clues together.

The Snowman (Harry Hole #7) by Jo Nesbo

Book Description:

Published: May 10, 2011

Internationally acclaimed crime writer Jo Nesbø’s antihero police investigator, Harry Hole, is back: in a bone-chilling thriller that will take Hole to the brink of insanity.

Oslo in November. The first snow of the season has fallen. A boy named Jonas wakes in the night to find his mother gone. Out his window, in the cold moonlight, he sees the snowman that inexplicably appeared in the yard earlier in the day. Around its neck is his mother’s pink scarf.

Hole suspects a link between a menacing letter he’s received and the disappearance of Jonas’s mother—and of perhaps a dozen other women, all of whom went missing on the day of a first snowfall. As his investigation deepens, something else emerges: he is becoming a pawn in an increasingly terrifying game whose rules are devised—and constantly revised—by the killer.

Fiercely suspenseful, its characters brilliantly realized, its atmosphere permeated with evil, The Snowman is the electrifying work of one of the best crime writers of our time.

Review –

This book was recommended as a winter read with spooky overtones and I couldn’t resist. It is  translated from the Norwegian and I had the audio book so I didn’t have to worry about wrongly pronouncing the names of people, places and things.

The story grabs you by the neck from the first few words and doesn’t let go.  I love a good “who-dun-it” but add in creepy snowmen at each crime scene and what could be better? I’m looking forward to listening to or reading more by this author.

Excellent!!

Within days the agency’s caseload is full. But it is a horrific murder in the wealthy Eastern Suburbs and the desperate search for a motive that stretches the team to the limit. Stacy Friel, friend of the Deputy Commissioner of NSW Police, isn’t the killer’s first victim – and as the bodies mount up she’s clearly not the last . . .

Review –

I never thought I’d read or listen to the Private series by James Patterson and his co-writers, but when I was faced with no audio book while driving all over town doing my errands I was desperate.  I stopped at a local Hastings store and found this audio book on sale for a very good price and so bought it and continued running my errands while listening to the story unfold.

Miracle of miracles, I actually liked it, so, when I got home I looked on Overdrive to see if any were available and found a few and have since listened to three more.  None of them are five stars but they are entertaining.

The premise of the stories are all about the same-some horrible crime occurs and Private is called into action to save the day. Like I said, it makes for an entertaining listen or read.

I recommend the series if you have an afternoon or evening with time  on your hands.

Wrath (Wrong #2) by L.P. Lovell and Stevie J. Cole

Book Description:

Published: August 25, 2015

***Warning. This book contains extreme violence, and scenes that may upset some readers. ***

Tor

Jude Pearson could just as well kill me as kiss me most days. He was my captor, my living hell, and yet, he became my saviour, my heart. Stupid. He’s heartless, conditioned to feel nothing, and so I ran… straight into the clutches of his enemy. Joe Campbell wants Jude to suffer, and I just became a pawn in a very dangerous game.

Joe has broken me in every way, everything that I once was stripped away, and in its place is festering hatred and a rage so cold I feel nothing else. I have one purpose. Revenge.

Jude

Love makes you weak, it makes you irrational. She was collateral, completely innocent when she was unwillingly dragged into my corrupt world. With the damage Id already caused her, I couldn’t let her love me, so I let her go, and now…he has her.

No matter where she is, she will always be mine. This man has taken every-fucking-thing from me, and he has the last thing that matters to me. I will kill him. Slowly. Joe Campbell better run because the devil is fucking coming for him.

Sometimes two wrongs can make a right.

Rage.

Hate.

Revenge.

Our Wrath binds us, but it may also break us.

Review  –

This is the conclusion of the Wrong series and is even more dark and violent.

Joe Campbell has kidnapped Tor so get back at Jude and does the most debasing and sadistically  horrible things to her before “letting” him find and rescue her. While he had her he gave Caleb, Jude’s younger brother and only family he has a choice-he can rape Tor or he can die. He refused to touch Tor so Joe killed him. Because of this both Jude and Tor are out for blood and hunt Joe down to kill him.

After being rescued, Tor realizes she pregnant but because of the time frame knows it is Jude’s baby. She chooses not to tell him right away, which comes back to bite her, but instead asks Jude to let her be the one to kill Joe.

Eventually Joe is killed, by Tor, and they are both arrested and Jude confesses to the murder because he doesn’t want his baby born in prison and raised by strangers. I won’t tell you exactly what happens but there is a deal made and Jude is freed and  he and Tor have their HEA.

Although everything works out in the end, this book is very dark and violent so if tread carefully if you decide to read it.

I thought this was an excellent series and the sex is not part of the story just for sex sake but is an integral part of the story,

Wrong (Wrong #1) by L.P. Lovell and Stevie J. Cole

Book Description:

Published: June 2, 2016

Tor

My life was mapped out and planned to perfection. I knew exactly what I wanted and where I was going, until I was thrust into his world and ripped from mine. In the blink of an eye everything shattered, proving to be nothing more than a cheap illusion. Now I’m living in this twisted form of hell, where enemies and friends are one and the same. I thought I wanted perfection. Now I don’t know what I want – perhaps not even my own freedom.

Jude

I’m the definition of wrong. I’m violent, I’m greedy, and I stop at nothing to win. I’m a notorious bookie and in my game paying with your life is not just a figure of speech. You lose, I collect. I take whatever you have. She’s collateral for a debt, and if that debt’s not paid someone will die. This should be just business, so why can’t I kill her?
Everything is not always as it seems.

Lust. Blood. Lies.

Nothing this wrong should feel so right.

Review –

This is the darkest erotic romance that I have read since Comfort Food by Kitty Thomas in May of last year, but, that being said, I as a reader felt sorrow for Jude. If it hadn’t been for his father he life would have been totally different. He had a degree from a prestigious university and a yearning for a safe, sane, normal life. But that wasn’t to be. So, here he is, a bookie without a soul who  would sooner kill you than look at you, except when it came to Tor.

Tor was on her way to becoming a doctor and was in love with her boyfriend until one day he couldn’t pay his debt to a bookie and he offered her as collateral. She couldn’t believe it. Her boyfriend offered her up like it was nothing. How could he? (We find out later that his uncle, Joe Campbell, has a violent history with Jude’s father and now Jude. He hoping while Tor is there she can “get the goods” on Jude. But it doesn’t work that way. Not by a long shot!)

Although, Jude tries to break her in every way imaginable, he can’t bring himself to kill her, even though he knows he can never let her go. She knows too much about him and his operation BUT against all odds he has developed deep feelings for her and so decides to let her goto keep her safe.  He can’t stand the thought of her leaving, their sex is flaming hot, but if he lets her stay she would be in constant danger. He gives her papers for a new identity and a plane ticket for London. It is for the best.

Tor arrives at the airport on the first leg of her journey and is kidnapped by none other than the infamous Joe Campbell and he intends to f*ck her up good!

Talk about cliffhanger!!!!

Adult, hot and dark.

Ten Thousand Skies Above You (Firebird #2) by Claudia Gray

Book Description:

Published: November 3, 2015

She resists until her boyfriend, Paul, is attacked and his consciousness scattered across multiple dimensions.

Marguerite has no choice but to search for each splinter of Paul’s soul. The hunt sends her racing through a war-torn San Francisco, the criminal underworld of New York City, and a glittering Paris where another Marguerite hides a shocking secret. Each world brings Marguerite one step closer to rescuing Paul. But with each trial she faces, she begins to question the destiny she thought they shared.

The second book in the Firebird trilogy, Ten Thousand Skies Above You features Claudia Gray’s lush, romantic language and smart, exciting action, and will have readers clamoring for the next book.

Review –

Since I had read the first book in the Firebird series, A Thousand Pieces of You, over a year ago I wasn’t sure that I would be able to jump into this book with the same enthusiasm. I shouldn’t have worried because from  the first few chapters I became just as engrossed as I had been previously.

It has parallel universes, drama, teen angst, romance, unrequited love, danger, suspense and ethical questions that need to be answered.

If you could jump into the body of another “you” would you be careful with the choices you make or would you haphazardly live life as if there was no tomorrow to leave the other “you” to live with the consciences of your actions when you leap back to your own body and universe?

That is one question that Marguerite is still trying to come to grips with.

Can’t wait for the next installment!

Desperate Domination (Bought by the Billionaire #3) by Lili Valente

Book Description:

Published: July 28, 2015

WARNING: This is a white-hot, panty-melting, boundary-pushing read. Not intended for the faint of heart.

“You’re mine. You belong to me. You will always belong to me. Because no one has ever made you feel the way I have.”

Jackson Hawke might be a monster, but he’s Hannah’s monster. They belong together and she’s determined to show Jackson she can love every part of him-light and dark, cruel and gentle, lost soul and Dominant man.

Jackson knows he doesn’t deserve her. He is broken and twisted and wrong inside, but when Hannah touches him it feels right, he feels right in a way he hasn’t in so long.

Can a monster learn to become a man again? Or will dark forces from the past claim Hannah’s life before she can claim his heart?

* * Desperate Domination is the 3rd in the Bought by the Billionaire romance series and ends in a CLIFFHANGER. For maximum enjoyment it should be read after books one and two.* *

Review –

“DESPERATE DOMINATION, the third book in this series, picks up right where the second left off. And, oh, how I had been waiting for this one, because my hair was standing on end at the end of Book 2, just waiting to see what Jackson Hawke had up his sleeve. And, in true Lili Valente fashion, she picked right back up with this mind-blower of a story and ran with it.

Just when it seems that Hannah and Jackson have reached a turning point in their twisted but crazily sexy and oddly romantic relationship, all bets are off. With one scene, Lili turns the mood of the story completely around, keeping me guessing with all of the shifts in action. Has Jackson realized who Hannah is? Is Hannah safe from Jackson? What will be the outcome for the two of them?

Darkness made the light shine brighter, pain made pleasure that much sweeter, and what was the point of angels if not to save beautiful devils like Jackson Hawke?

Jackson believes that he is beyond redemption, that nothing, not even Hannah’s love, can change the man that he has become. Hannah, unwilling to write him off, trusts him with everything that she is, all of her deepest secrets. But when Jackson just can’t forget about the past, a chain of events are set in motion that neither one could anticipate

And, there it is, THE END. I was not believing that Lili could do this again. This series is Cliffhanger Central, but I am not done, not nearly so. This book, like the rest of the series, is 5+ crazy, twisted, star-crossed, redemptive stars, and I cannot wait for DIVINE DOMINATION to answer all of my questions.” by Smut Book Junkie
