“I tried to play a game. I tried to wield deceit as perfectly as the Hawks. But when I thought I was winning, I wasn’t. Jethro isn’t what he seems—he’s the master of duplicity. However, I refuse to let him annihilate me further.”
Nila Weaver has grown from naïve seamstress to full-blown fighter. Every humdrum object is her arsenal, and sex…sex is her greatest weapon of all.
She’s paid the First Debt. She’ll probably pay more.
But she has no intention of letting the Hawks win.
Jethro Hawk has found more than a worthy adversary in Nila—he’s found the woman who could destroy him. There’s a fine line between hatred and love, and an even finer path between fear and respect.
The fate of his house rests on his shoulders, but no matter how much ice lives inside his heart, Nila flames too bright to be extinguished.
Things seemed to have settled down a bit for Jethro and Nila at the beginning of the third book in the Indebted Series, at least for a short time. Daniel, Jethro’s psychotic brother is always wanting to take Nila as he own, so much so, that Nila is now carrying a dirk under her dresses for protection. Kestrel is still the nice calming brother but Nila doesn’t feel the same about him as she has in the past.
She is allowed to go with the entire family to a Polo match and at half time Jethro finds her and they have mad passionate sex against some scaffolding. He wants Nila so bad but still is torn because of what he is (we still haven’t learned that secret) and his not being what he father wants him to be.
A few days after the Polo event, Cut, Jethro’s Dad tells him it’s time for the second debt to be paid. Jethro thinks it’s too soon but Cut wants it done now so he can see if Jethro is living up to the family coldness and sense of duty. Jethro brings Nila to a lake and there waiting is, Kestrel, Daniel, Cut and Bonnie,(Jethro’s grandmother-who is hateful) to witness that the debt is repaid correctly.
A fourteen year old ancestor of theirs was falsely accused of witchcraft by a Weaver and sentenced to drown in the 1400’s, so that is the second debt Nila is required to repay. She is strapped to a dunking chair and dunked under freezing cold water several times for various lengths of time. Jethro has no choice but to carry out the debt as written in the Hawk history books. Nila is dead when Jethro finally brings her ashore and revives her with mouth to mouth resuscitation. He then takes her to a natural underground spring to bring up her body temperature. It takes a while but she finally is able to stand on her own in the spring. He tells her that he will replace the bad memories with good ones and they have mad passionate sex in the spring. Afterwards Jethro tells her that he will tall her his secret in a few days.
A few days later law enforcement forces their way onto Hawk land with warrants to get Nila and take her home. Of course, Cut is furious and doesn’t want to let her go but Bonnie says to let her go but tells Nila and THIS IS NOT OVER YET. Jethro doesn’t want her to go and Nila wants to stay with him but he forces her to go. Cut tells Jethro they have to talk.(that will not be good-Cut has told his oldest son that he can get rid of him at any time)
Five Stars *****
