Bound by Lies (Bound #1) by Hanna Peach

Book Description:

Published: January 21, 2014

Our love is on his terms. He contacts me only through notes − unpredictable and untraceable. When we meet, he can touch me, but I’m not allowed to touch him. When we make love, it’s only after I have been bound and blindfolded. It’s the only time I truly feel alive. Which is why I play along with it. For now.

Caden Thaine is the most sinfully beautiful man I have ever seen. But more than that, his touch sets me on fire. And dear God, do I ache for him. I don’t know where he lives or even what he does. But this doesn’t scare me. My only fear is that one day his messages will stop.

I know he’s hiding something. But that’s okay. I am hiding things too. Like my real name and… who I really am. But the deeper I fall for him, the stronger my curiosity becomes.

I could never have imagined just how much our lives are bound. And that pulling at his tangled web of secrets would cause my own dark past to come back to try and reclaim me. Will we survive? Will our love?

Review –

While I rated this book four stars ***** on GoodReads I have many problems with it.

The main characters, “Kitten”(we don’t know her real name) and Caden are both so damaged and deceitful that I don’t think they would be able to have a relationship much less true feelings for one another. He won’t allow her to touch him during sex or see him naked plus Caden is not his real name and he has a haunted past that he could easily tell her about but he doesn’t, instead he turns away from her and leaves her wanting.  “Kitten” is running from a ex-boyfriend/crime boss who was abusive-physically,mentally and verbally and is afraid to get t0o close to anyone in fear she will have to pick up and re-locate at any time.

Between these two there is enough baggage to sink an ocean liner. I wish the author would had given each of them more backbone. I’m reading the sequel now and will report on it soon.

I hate this cover-it in no way relates to the story line. A better one would just show a blindfold and a silk tie laying across a bed.

The Body Finder (The Body Finder #1) By Kimberly Derting

Book Description:

Published: March 16, 2010

Violet Ambrose is grappling with two major issues: Jay Heaton and her morbid secret ability. While the sixteen-year-old is confused by her new feelings for her best friend since childhood, she is more disturbed by her “power” to sense dead bodies—or at least those that have been murdered. Since she was a little girl, she has felt the echoes that the dead leave behind in the world… and the imprints that attach to their killers.

Violet has never considered her strange talent to be a gift; it mostly just led her to find the dead birds her cat had tired of playing with. But now that a serial killer has begun terrorizing her small town, and the echoes of the local girls he’s claimed haunt her daily, she realizes she might be the only person who can stop him.

Despite his fierce protectiveness over her, Jay reluctantly agrees to help Violet on her quest to find the murderer—and Violet is unnerved to find herself hoping that Jay’s intentions are much more than friendly. But even as Violet is getting closer and closer to discovering a killer.. she might become his next prey.

Review –

THE BODY FINDER is the story of high school junior Violet Ambrose and it is the beginning of the school year, and she has a secret. She has fallen in love with Jay Heato, her  best friend since elementary school. Though they are accustomed to spending all their time together, it is getting more and more difficult for Violet because of her new feelings toward Jay. Complicating matters is the fact that half the girls at school are suddenly attracted to the handsome, easygoing Jay as well. Violet is determined to push aside her feelings, hoping to preserve the friendship that has meant so much to her for so long.

THE BODY FINDER is suspenseful but not too scary. In fact it could have been far scarier. I like that Violet’s parents weren’t depicted as idiots but as supportive of her and her ability. I also enjoyed seeing the growth of the relationship between Violet and Jay from best friend to boyfriend and the positive way he treated her.  There is bad language and dark issues in the last half of the book and I’m not really sure why the author included them.

There are a few nice twists in the novel (as well as a few predictable ones), Violet’s ability is interesting, and the author keeps it fairly mysterious. Unfortunately, the killer is not creepy enough and the ending is abrupt. Still, the book is an intriguing debut and intense enough to make it a worthwhile and fun YA thriller.

Five stars *****
Once I started listening to this book I had a VERY hard time thinking about other things I should be doing like housework, laundry, running errands etc. Instead I listened and listened some more. It is that good!
I’ve read some reviews that says this story is a re-hash of others like Red Rising, Graceling, and the Selection and I say WHAT IS WRONG WITH THAT? Although it may lean that way a bit it has its own shining stars in the characters of Mare, Princes Cal(heir to the throne) and his younger brother, Maven.
Mare is seventeen and rather a tomboy who is a very successful pickpocket just waiting to be conscripted to the Army because she doesn’t have a real job. She chances upon Cal one night, who is dressed in dirty clothes and looks like another other RED, so she doesn’t know his true identity. He gets her a job in the Palace and through no fault of her own falls from a balcony and her fear of falling to her death activates her electrifying ability and the King decides to use her to his courts advantage. He makes up a back story  for her of being a long-lost SILVER princess and she becomes engaged to Maven.
She is put in a course study to learn all the things a princess should know and how to control her ability. Maven becomes her close friend and conspirator in trying to make a change in the way the court see SILVERS and REDS. She wants equality for everyone.
While her eyes roam to Cal, she knows he is gung-ho SILVER and is working toward keeping the status quo.
Mare, Maven, Farley and others plan to peacefully overthrow the King but things don’t go as planned and innocent people are killed and she discovers that Maven has been lying about his allegiance all along.
Mare and Cal are sentenced to death in the Bowl of Bones and through they win with the help of her abilities and are rescued by Farley and the underground train all is not well. Cal is their prisoner and feels betrayed by Mare. While on the train Mare discovers that the brother she thought had been executed is alive and he is like her, RED with SILVER abilities that ate stronger than regular SILVERS.
Together they vow to find the others who are like them and bring down the SILVER court for the good of the REDS,
When Mare discovered that Maven had betrayed her and Cal learned that she had betrayed him I cried (of course I did) because it was a heart wrenching scene especially between Cal and Mare because they now had feelings for each other and had shared a kiss.
I can’t wait for the sequel!!!!!!!

Over the Edge (Alex Delaware #3) by Jonathan Kellerman

Book Description:

Published: March 2, 2004

When the phone rings in the middle of the night, child psychologist Alex Delaware does not hesitate. Driving through the dream-lit San Fernando Valley, Alex rushes to Jamey Cadmus, the patient he had failed five years before-and who now calls with a bizarre cry for help. But by the time Alex reaches Canyon Oaks Psychiatric Hospital, Jamey is gone, surfacing a day later in the hands of the police, who believe Jamey is the infamous Lavender Slasher, a psychotic serial killer. Wooed by a high-powered attorney to build a defense, Alex will get a chance to do what he couldn’t five years ago. And when he peers into a family’s troubled history and Jamey’s brilliant, tormented mind, the psychologist puts himself at the heart of a high-profile case. Because Alex knows that in a realm of money, loss, and madness, something terrible pushed Jamie over the edge-or else someone is getting away with murder.

Review –

Although Alex Delaware is one of my favorite book characters, I have to say I found this volume boring.  There was so much dialogue and not really very much action and there was just too much description  of psychotic behaviors, drugs, and treatments that it took away,at least for me, from the story line. There are twists and turns and an unexpected reason for all the drama but on the whole I was disappointed.

I have read many many of the Alex Delaware Series, but not from the early years so I think I will now find volumes one and two and see what they are like and hopefully there will be more action.

We discover that our beloved Nicholas has many hidden talents ( other than being a Greek god and great in the sack) can you picture him wearing and apron , baking cookies, no less. To bad that happens at a family dinner so no hanky panky was possible  between Nicholas and Rebecca ,or was it?

Sadly, Nicholas Father finds out that something is going on with this two pulls Nicholas to his office and confronts him about it and gives him an ultimatum . Rebecca sort of overhears and flees the scene…

I won’t give the ending away but the author does not disappoint. Nicholas and Rebecca have come a long way in learning about themselves and each other and deserve the best.

Fantastic series. I loved it!

Confess by Colleen Hoover

Book Description:

Published: March 10, 2015

Auburn Reed has her entire life mapped out. Her goals are in sight and there’s no room for mistakes. But when she walks into a Dallas art studio in search of a job, she doesn’t expect to find a deep attraction to the enigmatic artist who works there, Owen Gentry.

For once, Auburn takes a risk and puts her heart in control, only to discover Owen is keeping major secrets from coming out. The magnitude of his past threatens to destroy everything important to Auburn, and the only way to get her life back on track is to cut Owen out of it.

The last thing Owen wants is to lose Auburn, but he can’t seem to convince her that truth is sometimes as subjective as art. All he would have to do to save their relationship is confess. But in this case, the confession could be much more destructive than the actual sin…

Review –

OMG !!!!! (If you know anything about this book you’ll know why this exclamation is special)

Five stars *****

Once I started listening to this book (there was a male narrator for Owen’s part and a female for Auburn’s point of view) I couldn’t stop. It’s not a really long book to listen to-only about seven hours-but every time I had time I listened and then I forgot about other daily routine things and just listened. It’s that good.

Auburn lose’s the love of her life, Adam, through illness at the age of fifteen and has a baby out of the relationship at sixteen. Her parents wanted her to give the baby up for adoption but instead Adam’s mother have custody of the little boy and she would live with her while finishing school. But as years go by Auburn is just in a back seat position when it comes to raising AJ.

She loves to Dallas after graduating from Cosmetology School because that’s where Lydia lives with AJ and her son Trey.

She passes an art studio and sees a HELP WANTED sign and meets Owen Gentry, the artist, who is in dire need of someone to attend to the sale of his paintings at that nights showing. Owen and Auburn hit it off right away, but Owen has a secret or confession that he never plans to tell Auburn. It’s about how he knows her from before and where they met and more.

I don’t want to give anything away but suffice it to say Owen and Auburn are made for each other but things uncontrollable by both  will get in the way and cause pain for both of them. Neither can deny the feelings they have when together and Auburn knows that because of Owen’s arrest record she would have trouble getting custody of AJ so she agrees to “date” Trey, Adam’s brother, even though she has no real feelings for him. Trey is abusive, verbally and physically and something he does and has done in the past allows Auburn to get custody away from Lydia and lets him keep his job as a policeman. She and Owen re-unite and then in Owen’s words we learn the story of where and  how he met Auburn and by that time tears were rolling down my cheeks and I was sobbing. I love it when that happens.

Bound to You (Millionaire’s Row #2) by Vanessa Booke

Book Description:

Published: June 5, 2014

Rebecca finally starts with her six months trial as the personal assistant for the notorious playboy Nicholas StoneHaven. This book starts from where Bound to You  Volume 1 ends. Rebecca is now working with Nicholas on a daily basis and it’s harder that she thought. He’s the last man on earth that she’d find herself pinning for. And Nicholas isn’t going to make it easy for her. At first he  gives her all sorts of petty jobs to do for him, like picking up his dry cleaning and getting him a coffee at a far away coffee shop, so she would give up and quit.

Nicholas is forced to become engaged to Alison against his best judgement, and start planning the wedding. But his father is insisting because it will be good for business. He gives Nicholas a choice -marry her or lose everything.

But can Nick resist his own personal assistant, Rebecca?

Review –

The answer, simply, is NO!

No matter how Nicholas tries to avoid Rebecca or push her away, he finds himself drawn to her. Rebecca is having the same dilemma  and she knows that hooking up with the owner’s son could cost her job, but they always seem to end up together

They attend a charity function together and end up out on a balcony, even though it’s freezing outside,(neither noticed) and have hot steamy sex. Another time they have hotter sex in his office on a work day and she has to hide under his desk to keep from being discovered when he father walks in.

She tries dating someone from work but her heart isn’t it.

At a club, Nicholas’s best friend kisses Rebecca hotly knowing that Nicholas is watching to provoke him into admitting that he has serious feelings for her. Nicholas becomes livid and punches Tristan in the face. By this time Rebecca just wants to get out of there, so she goes out into the rain and Nicholas comes after her, hails a cab, and takes her to her apartment. Once there he kisses her goodnight at the front entrance and leaves. While Rebecca is making her way to her apartment she hears a familiar voice and turns to see the one person she never thought she’d see again. MILE STORM!   End.

I Love this series because as HOT as it is the author adds humor to the mix and makes the characters real, not just words on a page.

I’ve read the next book and will report on it soon.

Hot Ink (Inked In The Steel City #1) by Ranae Rose

🙂 I usually don’t post out-of-order but I’m going out-of-town today and I had this one finished and Volume 2 of Bound to You will have to wait until I get back.

Book Description:

Published: December 14, 2011

Mina never meant to fall for her sexy tattoo artist, Eric, or to become a model. But when she’s asked to pose in a photo shoot for the Hot Ink tattoo studio, she can’t say no. She finally gets a look at Eric’s tattoos when they’re cajoled into posing together, and in a few breathtaking moments, an on-camera kiss turns the passion they’re asked to fake into something very real, leaving them both wanting more. The only problem is that Mina’s not the glamour girl she looks like on the Hot Ink posters, or even in a tattoo magazine. She’s only twenty-four, but being the sole guardian of her disabled younger sister has left her feeling much older. Will Eric still be interested when he gets to know the girl behind the ink and the make-up and finds out that she and her little sister are a package deal?

Review –

This is a sweet( really, it is) romance about a 20 something girl with 40 something responsibilities. She has guardianship of her fourteen year old sister who was tragically hurt in an auto accident when she was seven. The girl’s mother was driving drunk and crashed the car and Mina was hurt badly also which left thick ugly scars on her upper thigh. Mina doesn’t think the hot tattoo artist Eric, would be interested in her because of said responsibilities. Little does she know, he wants to be more!

It’s a short story (I wish it had been longer)  the romance wasn’t  rushed or over the top and the sex was light and near the end.

It was a pleasant read.

Bound to You (Millionaire’s Row #1) by Vanessa Booke

Book Description:

Published: May 5, 2014

Arrogant, brooding, domineering, possessive, dangerously handsome, and a playboy. These are all the characteristics on Rebecca Gellar’s Run-Like-Hell list for men, but she’s about to meet a man who’s the epitome of these and more…

After breaking off her engagement with Hollywood actor Miles Storm, Rebecca is ready for a change of scenery in her life and in her bed. So when the opportunity to work for StoneHaven Publishing, one of New York City’s most respectable publishing empires, presents itself, Rebecca doesn’t hesitate moving to the Big Apple.

Convinced she can show the owner of StoneHaven Publishing that she has the ‘right stuff,’ Rebecca agrees to a six-month trial as the personal assistant to the owner’s playboy son, Nicholas StoneHaven. This is her big chance. If she can just get through these six months without strangling Nicholas with his Armani tie, she’ll be okay—easier said than done. Nicholas is the last person Rebecca thought she’d find herself pining for, especially when he hits every category on her list

Review –

This is volume one in the Millionaire’s Row Series and I came upon it by accident and I’m very glad I did!

Rebecca’s is a curvy, average, all American girl who’s dating a move star.  Miles is caught up with his co-star and Rebecca is having none of it. No matter how much Miles tries to make Rebecca believe he had sex with his co-star to create more on-screen chemistry, Rebecca isn’t having it and dumps him.

Wanting to leave LA and try something new, Rebecca takes a chance and applies for a job with her dream company, StoneHaven Publishing in New York.  She gets the interview.

Halfway into her flight across the country, things are looking up when, by accident, she meets (falls in his lap) a handsome gentleman in First Class. He’s very attractive and sexy looking, but she believes there’s no way – especially so soon after Miles.

Rebecca has several  chance meetings with this  hunk  from First Class and has her realizing she wants him, badly. Passions begin to flare and then his fiancé walks in. End.

The characters are well-defined and very likeable, except for Miles, of course and Rebecca is described as curvy so I guess she’s supposed to be a BBW. Usually this means she wears a size 14, but I think the author has done a good job of describing her larger frame in the most flattering way.  I’m looking forward to reading the other two books in the series because you can just tell that sexual sparks are going to fly.

Review –

I enjoyed reading this free  book but was disappointed that it was so short(103 pages).  I understand the author’s thinking that if you like it enough you’ll be willing to buy the next in the series. But, I don’t know if I want to spend money for a book that is only about a hundred pages long and then have to buy another and another to complete the series.  Instead, why not write one long book and charge a reasonable price? It’s a shame because I really liked the two main characters and their intense chemistry together and a bad guy has turned up that I didn’t expect. That being said, I don’t plan to go any further with this series.
