The List by

Product Description:

Published: April 1, 2012

An intense look at the rules of high school attraction — and the price that’s paid for them.

It happens every year. A list is posted, and one girl from each grade is chosen as the prettiest, and another is chosen as the ugliest. Nobody knows who makes the list. It almost doesn’t matter. The damage is done the minute it goes up.

This is the story of eight girls, freshman to senior, “pretty” and “ugly.” And it’s also the story of how we see ourselves, and how other people see us, and the tangled connection of the two.

With THE LIST, Siobhan Vivian deftly takes you into the lives of eight very different girls struggling with issues of identity, self-esteem, and the judgments of their peers. Prettiest or ugliest, once you’re on the list, you’ll never be the same.

Review –

This really wasn’t my type of young adult book but it was on my “to be read” list and my library had it available so I checked it out and finished it in an evening. A lot of teen-angst and drama and a lot of truth so all in all it was okay.  Anyone that prefers books of this nature would find it more appealing that I did but that’s why there are different genres for different people.

It’s all-out war (and no-holds-barred romance) in the climactic conclusion to Carrie Jones’s bestselling series.

Evil pixies are ravaging Bedford, and they need much more than one great warrior; they need an army. Zara isn’t sure what her role is anymore. She’s not just fighting for her friends; she’s also a pixie queen. And to align her team of pixies with the humans she loves will be one of her greatest battles yet. Especially since she can’t even reconcile her growing feelings for her pixie king . . .

Unexpected turns, surprising revelations, and one utterly satisfying romantic finale make Endure a thrilling end to this series of bestsellers.

Review –

In this the last installment of the Need Series Nick is rescued by Zara and yes, he hates that now she’s a pixie queen, Zara has to pull together an army and if that means involving humans, then so be it, and she has to come to terms with who she really loves. I was very happy with the way the series ended and highly recommend it if you like young adult, paranormal, love triangle books.

Lisey’s Story by Stephen King

Product Description:

Published: October 24, 2006

Lisey Debusher Landon lost her husband, Scott, two years ago, after a twenty-five-year marriage of the most profound and sometimes frightening intimacy. Scott was an award-winning, bestselling novelist and a very complicated man. Early in their relationship, before they married, Lisey had to learn from him about books and blood and bools. Later, she understood that there was a place Scott went — a place that both terrified and healed him, that could eat him alive or give him the ideas he needed in order to live. Now it’s Lisey’s turn to face Scott’s demons, Lisey’s turn to go to Boo’ya Moon. What begins as a widow’s effort to sort through the papers of her celebrated husband becomes a nearly fatal journey into the darkness he inhabited. Perhaps King’s most personal and powerful novel, “Lisey’s Story” is about the wellsprings of creativity, the temptations of madness, and the secret language of love.

Review –

This was my second reading of this Stephen King novel and this time I chose to listen to it and I found I enjoyed it even more.

There are multiple stories being told, the first being Scott Landon, a writer who dies two years ago. he had a very bad childhood and would “go” to place when things got to bad or to heal. The second store is about Lisey’s sister,  Amanda, has a history of cutting and metal problems and has been aware of Scott’s paranormal powers. The third story is Lisey’s, which involves the first two and a crazy man who calls her MRS. and huts her very bad physically and she “goes” to Scott’s safe place to heal and figure out a way to get rid of the tormentor.  A wonderful story of love, loss, and madness.

Review –

Another good book in the Hamish MacBeth Series but not one of the author’s best. Still a fast pleasant read.

He rebuilds his life, and his passion returns, for words, and for a childhood friend.

Jake ignites the spark of hope within her, and she within him. And each for very different reasons. When circumstances from their past collide with their present, will their hopes survive? Will tragedy cause a horrific breakdown or an inspirational destiny?

Review –

This was a wonderful book and would make a perfect movie on the Lifetime Movies Network or the “Women’s Channel” as my husband calls it. The story held my interest for the first few pages and the more I read the harder I found I couldn’t put it down.

There is a saying that “you can never go home again” but that’s just what Jake Brigham does and he finds a childhood friend, Allie Tanner, whose life has been anything but a bed of roses and together they bring to each other what is needed and I won’t tell you the ending but it’s good.

In the story there are family dynamics, childhood friends, marriage, divorce, love found, love lost romance, humor and tears.

Entice (Need #3) by Carrie Jones

Product Description:

Published : December 14, 2010

Zara and Nick are soul mates, meant to be together for ever. But that’s not quite how things have worked out. For starters, Nick has gone. He has been taken to the mythical place for warriors known as Valhalla. Zara and her friends might be able to get him back, it’s just not going to be easy. Meanwhile a group of evil pixies is devastating Bedford, with more teens going missing every day. An all-out war seems imminent, and the good guys need all the warriors they can find. But even if Zara and her friends do discover the route to Valhalla, there’s that other small problem: Zara’s been pixie kissed. When she finds Nick, will he even want to go with her? Especially since she hasn’t turned into just any pixie… She’s Astley’s queen

Review –

Nick, Zara’s werewolf boyfriend is in Vahalla, and Zara and her friends have to find a way to get him out and in order to do that she has allowed herself to be pixie kissed by Astley and has become his queen.  How to you think Nick is going to take the news. Yup, not good, not good at all. Love this series.

Captivate (Need #2) by Carrie Jones

Product Description:

Published: December 14, 2010

Zara and her friends thought they’d solved the pixie problem. And they did – sort of. The pixie’s are all locked away, deep in the woods. But the king’s needs grow stronger each day that he is in captivity, while his control over his people weakens. And it’s enough to draw a new king into town. Astley claims he is different. He claims there are pixies who can live peacefully with humans, that it doesn’t have to be all violence and nastiness all the time. Zara wants to believe him…until Astley also claims that she is fated to be his queen.

There is no way Zara would ever turn pixie. And she’s got good friends who will make sure of that. Besides, she and Nick are so in love they’re practically inseparable. But when they very thing Zara wants to protect most is exactly what’s at risk, she is forced to make choices she never imagined.

Review-

The Pixie King is Zara’s father and is captured along with some of his followers while Zara and her friends decide what to do.  Astley,(a good pixie-if there is such a thing) tells Zara that she is meant to be his queen.  Just another day in the life of an average teenager. Yeah. Loved it regardless and look forward to the next installment.

Need (Need #1) by Carrie Jones

Product Description:

Published: December 8, 2009

Zara collects phobias the way other girls collect Facebook friends. Little wonder, since life’s been pretty rough so far. Her father left, her stepfather just died, and her mother’s pretty much checked out. Now Zara’s living with her grandmother in sleepy, cold Maine so that she stays “safe.” Zara doesn’t think she’s in danger; she thinks her mother can’t deal.

Wrong. Turns out that guy she sees everywhere, the one leaving trails of gold glitter, isn’t a figment of her imagination. He’s a pixie—and not the cute, lovable kind with wings. He’s the kind who has dreadful, uncontrollable needs. And he’s trailing Zara.

With suspense, romance, and paranormal themes, this exciting breakout novel has readers rapidly turning the pages.

Review-

If you didn’t know anything about phobias you will by the time you finish reading the first installment of the Need Series by Carrie Jones. Zara, the main character, goes around counting  and collecting phobias when she nervous or goes through a rough patch in her life.  She has to move from Charleston,SC to Maine to live with her grandmother, start a new school and make friends. Not as easy as it sounds if the town you now live in is the hotbed for pixies and a war is brewing. There is romance, mystery, werewolves and other were animals and a surprise around every corner. It is a fast read and I gave it five stars *****.

Here are a few phobias: (just to name a few)

Something Borrowed, Someone Dead (Agatha Raisin #24) by M.C. Beaton

Product Description:

Published: September 17, 2013

Gloria French was a jolly widow with dyed blonde hair, a raucous laugh and rosy cheeks. When she first moved from London to the charming Cotswolds hills, she was heartily welcomed.  She seemed a do-gooder par excellence, raising funds for the church and caring for the elderly.  But she had a nasty habit of borrowing things and not giving them back, just small things, a teapot here, a set of silverware there.  So it’s quite the shock when she is found dead, murdered by a poisoned bottle of elderberry wine.  Afraid the murder will be a blight on the small town, Parish councillor, Jerry Tarrant, hires private detective Agatha Raisin to track down the murderer.

But the village is secretive and the residents resent Agatha’s investigation. Of course that doesn’t stop the ever-persistent Agatha from investigating and sticking her nose where no one wants it—especially as the suspect list grows. And, as if it isn’t enough that Agatha’s ex has reentered the picture, the murderer is now targeting Agatha!

Review –

Another fast paced, humor filled book by M.C. Beaton starring Agatha Raisin, the savvy private detective.  A very pleasant  and fast read.

Death of a Policeman(Hamish MacBeth #30) by M.C. Beaton

Product Description:

Published: February 25, 2014

Local police stations all over the Scottish Highlands are being threatened with closure. This presents the perfect opportunity for Detective Chief Inspector Blair, who would love nothing more than to get rid of Sergeant Hamish Macbeth. Blair suggests that Cyril Sessions, a keen young police officer, visit the town of Lochdubh to monitor exactly what Macbeth does every day. Macbeth hears about Blair’s plan and is prepared to insure that Cyril returns back to headquarters with a full report. But Cyril is soon found dead and Hamish quickly becomes the prime suspect in his murder.

Review:

I have read every book in this series and it is one of my favorites because the books are fast reads with pleasant (maybe not the right word) murder mysteries involving Hamish MacBeth, a Scottish policeman who doesn’t want to move up in ranks because he would have to leave the station where is now assigned. There isn’t a lot of crime so he spends time with his dog and cat and drives around the country side and sometimes goes fishing.

Of course, some in the series are better than others, and I found this one a little lacking. But all in all, I enjoyed reading it and look forward to the next installment.  Hopefully soon Hamish will find the love of his life, which may be a good thing and maybe not.
