Book Description

Publication Date: December 1, 2009 | Series: Beautiful Creatures
There were no surprises in Gatlin County. We were pretty much the epicenter of the middle of nowhere. At least, that’s what I thought. Turns out, I couldn’t have been more wrong. There was a curse. There was a girl. And in the end, there was a grave.
Lena Duchannes is unlike anyone the small Southern town of Gatlin has ever seen, and she’s struggling to conceal her power, and a curse that has haunted her family for generations. But even within the overgrown gardens, murky swamps and crumbling graveyards of the forgotten South, a secret cannot stay hidden forever.
Ethan Wate, who has been counting the months until he can escape from Gatlin, is haunted by dreams of a beautiful girl he has never met. When Lena moves into the town’s oldest and most infamous plantation, Ethan is inexplicably drawn to her and determined to uncover the connection between them.
In a town with no surprises, one secret could change everything.

Review –
This is  a story of good vs evil, light vs dark, family loyalty, true friendships and young love, however, the ending did leave me feeling a bit let down. Maybe it’s just me but I was looking for a little more explanation at the end, but that leaves it open to a sequel later. This is a Young Adult paranormal book but perfect for anyone that likes a good read.
This is the second time I’ve read this book and I did it to refresh my memory because the movie will be out soon.

Book Description

Release date: December 27, 2011 | Series: All Souls Trilogy (Book 1)

“A wonderfully imaginative grown-up fantasy with all the magic of Harry Potter and Twilight.” –People

In a sparkling debut, A Discovery of Witches became the “it” book of early 2011, bringing Deborah Harkness into the spotlight and galvanizing fans around the world. In this tale of passion and obsession, Diana Bishop, a young scholar and the descendant of witches, discovers a long-lost and enchanted alchemical manuscript deep in Oxford’s Bodleian Library. Its reappearance summons a fantastical underworld, which she navigates with her leading man, vampire geneticist Matthew Clairmont. Harkness has created a universe to rival those of Anne Rice, Diana Gabaldon, and Elizabeth Kostova, and she adds a scholar’s depth to this riveting story of magic and suspense. And the story continues in Book Two, Shadow of Night.

*****

This book portrays, Witches, Vampires and Daemons in a completely different light  which is refreshing and key to the plot.  The characters are wonderfully described and interaction between Matthew and Diana is a breath of fresh air. Also, I thought the sexiness of Matthew was written with just enough of an edge as not to overdo and I can see why Diana fell for him even though it was taboo.

I hadn’t realized it was the first of a trilogy but by the last few chapters I was hoping for a continuation and once I looked at the author’s website I was thrilled to find the second book was available and can’t wait to read it.

This is my second book of the year to get a FIVE STAR rating.  *****

*****

This is a fantastic series for those you like teen drama, mystery, science fiction and  medical thrillers. Mary E. Pearson  concludes the series in such a way as to tie up all the strings and clutch at your heart while doing so.  I cried and cried reading the last few pages and for me that is always a sign of a book that will remain securely in my mind and heart.  This is the first book of the year that I have rated FIVE STARS. *****
